We're trying to run scandisk(thorough) and defrag on a win98 machine. Running in safe mode with nothing running but explorer. Scan gets partway through, then stops with the error "Scandisk has performed an illegal operation.....".

We've run Norton Windoctor, but cannot get scandisk to complete. Any Ideas would be most appreciated.

I had a similar problem to this a while back and it was down to my virus software. In the run box i typed msconfig.exe, in the window that appears, one of the tabs contains entrys for programs that start up when you first boot, i deselected the entry for my virus software, rebooted and then ran scandisk successfully, once this had finished i went back into msconfig.exe and reselected the virus software and rebooted again

That's fine, except those programs don't even run when using safe mode. That's the whole reason for using safe mode, there are no startup prograns or drivers loaded to interfere.

Whoops, that Windows 95! I`ll keep looking and post if I find anything.

No, this applies to Windows 98 too, so it might be worth using System File Checker to replace dkmaint.dll from cabs or disk.

Thanks, aldiboronti, I'll give it a try and let you know.

Try booting with a bootdisk and run scandisk from your Win98 cd.
