The only work around would be to send it off to get repaired. I'm going to base this off, you are at a client site, you have plugged phones in and they are upgrading and the switch goes down. and then the phone is bricked.

Are you asking that the users use different logins for the different sites? Because if a user signs in with either the Name or extension number, and all the correct server details it should log them in and work as if they have a desk phone. Make sure that they have a license as well.. at the...
The base extension is saved, but as another user with a different extension is logging in to the phone it won't save that base extension, you may need to have force log in switched on.

Check to make sure your PC isn't bottlenecking itself, check the ram and cpu.
I'd do some TLC on the laptop as well, check through control panel and see if anything you don't need is on it, if you are unsure, always check on the internet and forums if you need it or not, I'd be more than happy...

If you go to "home" then options & settings then call settings then headset signaling, then try using switch hook & alerting.
This resolved the same issue in my office.
