I believe the database is corrupted. What you can do is to either delete(or rename) all index files under ArcServe/database directory
1. rAAAAAAA?.chg (delete all if you have many of these files)
2. rdm.chk
3. rdm.chi
If database service still does not come up. You may need to copy all files...

Have you add/modify devices on your SCSI bus? Or have you add/ change SCSI adapters onto the server? If it was working fine and the probelm start to pop up recently I will think this is the direction of your investigation.

Also make sure you have the latest (and correct version of) SMDR and TSA. Too many times I have seem Novell screw up on these 2 nlms and cause the server to abend.

1. Either you specify on the destination pane to be specific down to the drive level or
2. If you are trying to restore a database make sure you have the right database agent installed on the target server.

On my NT environment I was told to run pre and post scripts to stop the real time scan for the backup to run. It is not an backup issue. You need to address on the virus scanning like TherLocker suggested.

Look closely in the activity log it should indicate errors over there.
If you go to ARcserve's device manager, how many slots are there on the left pane? Also did you see the last slot has a different color bitmap? If yes, re-run the changer setup again and make sure you disable cleaning.
