Monique,

Please verify that all ArcServe services are running on an administrator account.
If the database engine is still not starting, consider creating a dedicated ArcServe Account with admin rights, rigths to log on locally, and rights to log on as a service... it worked for me ---------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe the database is corrupted. What you can do is to either delete(or rename) all index files under ArcServe/database directory

1. rAAAAAAA?.chg (delete all if you have many of these files)
2. rdm.chk

3. rdm.chi

If database service still does not come up. You may need to copy all files from emptydb to database direcotry. All your data will be lost if you are doing this.

I don't see the point in erasing these r* files. In medievil times people believed that this was how to fix a corrupt database. It wont work, they are just changeover files, and as such the number are determined in the velocis.ini file located in the database directory. The simply occur once a threshold has been reached. They are poor innocent defenseless little things.

You need some hardcore troubleshooting. Make sure you have all of the advanced rights in the system account (administrator on its own is simply NOT ENOUGH). Make sure you can log into the database engine (start it up and check the activity log for any errors). If there are errors, then please post them here so we can deduce the issue.

And try deleting the RNNAME variable in the system environmental variables on NT or 2000. Also, while your there, make sure CATPATH is pointing to the correct arcserve database directory...

good luck
