Well I know for a fact the system restore will not restore to any point created after Sept 8, 2001. The algorithm that Microsoft used to create restore points is faulty. The patch they released "should" correct the issue. The file name is 290700usam.exe

Unless you are using Win95 osr2 or higher you cannot have a partition over 2gb. Whenever this system was initially setup the drive was probably fdisked incorrectly. Boot into DOS and view the partition info by using the fdisk command. I would bet that you have unpartitioned space. Let us know.

Did you used to have integrated sound? You may need to go into your BIOS and disable the onboard sound. Does it say PCI Multimedia Device or PCI Multimedia Audio Device? It makes a big difference!

You cannot downgrade ME or 98. You may try booting to DOS and typing deltree c:\windows. Then you may be able to install 98 over ME. You will not lose any data that is not in the windows directory, but some applications will probably not work. But best solution is formatting the HDD.
