Computer at work won't recognize HD greater than 2gb.

the machine: AMD K6-2 350, 4.3gb HD; bios recognizes 4.3gig HD. System Information in Windows shows 2.0 gig HD.

OS- Win95 4.00.950B

My school uses NT for networking.

Quest:

Can I get my machine to recognize the other 2 gigs of HD space without messing up our network? Some of our computers use Win 95 and some use Win98.

Hello, scottharris.

You have not mentioned the manufacturer of your harddrive. Visit the manufacturer's website and usually they have disk manager for users to download free so as to have your system recognize the totality of its capacity.

Is the computer using fat or fat32. It will need to be running fat32 to recognise the whole drive. To find out, right click on the drive in My Computer and click on properties, it will have the file system there. You can run the fat32 converter from Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools if you need to.

Unless you are using Win95 osr2 or higher you cannot have a partition over 2gb. Whenever this system was initially setup the drive was probably fdisked incorrectly. Boot into DOS and view the partition info by using the fdisk command. I would bet that you have unpartitioned space. Let us know.

DigitalMajik is quite correct and yes you can use all 4gig with Win95 osr2 otherwise you must divide the diskspace into 2 2gig partitions e.g. C: drive=2gig D: drive=2gig
