Most issues with copper cabling all go back to how well it was installed, if it was installed correctly and to standard then there should be no issues and long lasting
I believe the issues that you may be experiencing with faulty cable pairs etc maybe down to the isolators/protection modules...

I have a NEC XN120 Vision telephone handset that is auto answering hands free
I have turned the facility off globally 15-02-16 0 = off and 1 = on or maybe the other way round not got my book handy at the moment but the extension still auto answers
any ideas
can you turn auto answering...
You don't say what type of phone system you are connecting to
You could be trying to connect to a digital extension or IP?
As mforrence says it maybe against local regulations to put the alarm through a phone sysytem, if you have to put it through a phone system i would try and pick a power...

think the only way to get a headset working on an NEC XN120 system phone is with a Plantronics HL10 handset lifter http://www.plantronics.com/uk/product/hl10
you plug the headset into the handset port but leave the handset in place for the lifter to operate the switch hooks
not very pretty...
sounds like you want something like a RJ45 cable economiser?
they come in three flavours,
data- data
data - voice
Voice - voice
just look on the web for whichever type you want, they are in pairs (one at each end)

think NEC tried to be everything to all with this switch
not over impressed with its construction either, just feels flimsy, sorry but just my opinion
Know a guy who used to install the BEC XN120's
great little system, full of features again, but alas no more due to the tsunami
He had a go with the SL1100 but had issues with it rebooting and loosing config
Now just installs Panasonic's due to the bad experience he had with the SL1100...
