I see a lot of misinformation here. "Wires" seems to have it right. I'll throw my 2 cents in and try to keep it as simple as possible. I have professionally installed cable tv and satellite for a number of years. I have attended training classes and I am certified. La-dee-da.

IMHO you should get a CAT 5 tester like a Pentascanner/Omniscanner or Fluke or Wirescope and certify the network Category 5 or 5E. Software comes with the respective scanners so you can print nice reports. I'm a BICSI certified Technician and that's all we ever do when "certifying" our...
Thanks.
fyi I'm using Red Hat 6.1 because it was free on CD and I have 2 good books on it
do I need a new modem or can I use one I already have (US Robotics)?
Can I get on the net ok with 6.1 or should I upgrade to 7.3?
(sorry for turning this into linux thread...)
My primary computer runs Win2K. I dialup to the Internet. My ISP doesn't support Linux. I have a linux box that I want to use online. Can I share the modem on my Win2K box with the linux box via some sort of network?
Thanks

Length of patch cables shouldn't matter but use a length appropriate for the distance from PC to wall plate (ie don't use 20 ft if...
I have tried everything. I re-installed on a new HD with a barebones box and I keep getting the same error "explorer.exe has performed an illegal operation....the program will be terminated" or something similar. Then the desktop disappears and I have to reboot. Sometimes it happens as...
