Did you talk to McAfee? On my NT environment I was told to run pre and post scripts to stop the real time scan for the backup to run. It is not an backup issue. You need to address on the virus scanning like TherLocker suggested.

If you go to ARcserve's device manager, how many slots are there on the left pane? Also did you see the last slot has a different color bitmap? If yes, re-run the changer setup again and make sure you disable cleaning.
