Have you emptied your temp folder lately? It might be time to do some maintenance. Here's a little checklist:
-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp)
-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet...
The first place I would look is spyware. Download AdAware ( http://www.lavasoft.de ), update it, run it & remove what it finds.
The second place would be the power supply.
After that, check all the other items mentioned above.
I concur -- sounds like a power supply or other power problem.
But as to the anti-virus program thing, you definitely need to have one installed and always on.
Same answer -- search on Google.
If you suspect something might be a virus / trojan, you can also go to Symantec.com and search for the filename there.
You won't have to run in safe mode if you use Diskeeper. (http://www.executive.com) I got it myself several months ago after finally getting just too disgusted with the built-in defragger. (I'm not usually one to buy utilities.) But it's great. It doesn't restart on open apps, it doesn't take...
You can also open normal.dot, click SAVE, then close it, before closing Word. This is a roundabout way to do it, but is a way to ensure your changes are definitely saved.
If Word crashes (or if the computer crashes while Word is still open), no changes will be saved to normal.dot. That's why...
Try this:
1. Close Word
2. Rename normal.dot to normal.old
3. Reopen Word
If this fixes the problem then normal.dot was corrupt. (When you did #3 above, Word created a new normal.dot.) If you had macros or styles stored in the old normal.dot, you can now copy them from normal.old into...
When you are opening the file, set it to "all file types" rather than "recover from" file type. If you can't do that (because it's forcing you to "recover"), then open the file in WordPad instead, then copy and paste the data into a Word doc.
For future reference, you might have better luck...
I would do the above (particularly checking for viruses and for spyware). A couple of other things you can do to speed things up:
--Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp)
--Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*)
--Run Disk Cleanup (Start, Programs...
