Hi

We have just installed a new IT suite with Windows XP, Office 2003 Pro and Windows 2003 Small Business Server.

We have found that Word is not saving its settings on exit, could this be a write/modify permission problem on the local computer or just a setup problem.

We also use 3rd party, semi-bespoke software that uses its own .DOT file (just in case that could cause problems).

many thanks B

Word settings are saved in normal.dot. It is possible the 3rd party template is taking over. Check to see if that 3rd party .Dot file is loaded as a global template - Tools > Templates and Addins. If it is, temporarily unload it, and see if your settings are saved.

Find all instances of normal.dot so you know where they are. If you record a macro, is it there when you exit Word and restart it it? If it is, then Word is saving some settings.

Are no settings being saved, or just some?

You can create your own setting template and use [templates and add-ins] under [Tools] to select it. A document template can also be set to use this alternative template for all new documents. This also allows several people sharing a system to have their own setting.

You can also open normal.dot, click SAVE, then close it, before closing Word. This is a roundabout way to do it, but is a way to ensure your changes are definitely saved.

If Word crashes (or if the computer crashes while Word is still open), no changes will be saved to normal.dot. That's why the above is a good idea to do if you've made a lot of changes to normal.dot.

I personally prefer storing as many macros, customizations, etc., in my own templates, because normal.dot has a habit of going corrupt, and this is a waste of time having to reconstruct everything.
