If this modem/router is for a corporate network, I do not advise using it as both modem and router.
We have seen many issues where these modems have not lived up to expectations and have wasted more than their fair share of time. The best formula is usually to let the modem do a modem's job...
Greetings Cogen,
Your question has to be one of the most popular ones we get on a weekly basis. The answers you have received are quite good.
Just make sure to keep in mind that ADSL connections can not be bonded (to effectively double) your download and upload speed, but rather will allow...
Greetings Ckaspar,
I have heard good things about the Sonicwall routers in regards to both protection and firewall, they might be worth looking into, IF you are willing to part with your Linksys boxes.
As far as VPN is concerned, VNC is my choice as well; for remote computing/access. It all...
Greetings Assd,
We strongly recommend the use of a router (even a very basic one) for any type of networking (especially with Windows). There are even USB-modem compatible ones available.
The reason is simple - it will be a lot easier for you to set-up, change, modify or upgrade your network...
Greetings Ansonng,
I know this may sound silly, but has your provider assigned you a static/fixed IP address? Are you using NAT to work out your internal (LAN) IPs?
Can you reach your router at all from the outside?
It's always best to check the simple things first.

Greetings Shaglund,
Although I have no direct experience with this specific router, most routers of this type are fairly similar.
Often, our customers enter more information into the router than is required. We suggest that DNS info NOT be entered into the router (if possible - sometimes you...
Greetings JSAAD,
The nexland setup is a good suggestion, you may also wish to consider 1 single machine capable of handling the task at hand. It makes things a lot easier to work with, should you ever encounter problems.
I have heard good reviews for the Janus RX, which has 3 ports into which...
Hello Leo-Steph
Ah, this sounds more like Synchronous DSL. That should be more than adequate for most websites, some people I know even host e-commerce sites on their SDSL feeds.
Just make sure that your security settings are optimal.
Good luck!
Greetings Woodro,
Most modems should work with your Telco's DSLAM. The ones that will not work are the Nortel (CAP protocol; incompatible) and the D-Link is to be avoided (very unreliable modems, but the routers are OK).
I also know that there are various versions of the Speedstream 5000...
Greetings Leo-Steph
It sounds like you want to host a website on your ADSL connection.
Keep in mind that when an end-user is downloading a web page from you, your download speed is irrelevant. What counts is upload. I don't know who your provider is but 1 Mb ADSL usually has +/- 128 kbps up...
Hi Techrex,
You are probably saving a substantial amount of money by having switched from the T1 to DSL, but keep in mind that DSL can not be treated as a mission critical service, as opposed to a T1.
I recommend getting the static IP address. It will make things easier and should still cost...
Hi there,
Unfortunately, this happens every now and then because of various reasons. You might be on loaded cable, which can be in 1/2 a building and the other half is not.
There is not much you can do, except maybe order a new line, specify that it is for DSL access, but your TELCO will not...
Hi Peter,
I hope you found your solution by now, but just in case:
You will need: 1 - the Power adapter, to juice up your modem. 2 - A network cable (RJ45), to connect the modem to your computer our router. 3 - your phone line (RJ11), to feed into your modem. 4 - Line filters, for all phone...
Hi Gregmacca,
What you have experienced is quite common. You're on the right track though; a firewall is the way to go.
Routers are usually the right choice for business applications. Just make sure that you don't just "have" a firewall, because if it is set up improperly, it is of...
