    ArcServe and VTLs/Tape Libraries

DR and quick restores is one of the main reasons why we're looking to implement a disk based solution. The confusion comes from which disk based solution to implement. Do you go with a VTL, basic attached disk, or a data deduplication appliance like Data Domain offers? If a full backup is...

    ArcServe and VTLs/Tape Libraries

I appreciate the response Cyklops! The reason why we're leaning towards a VTL solution as opposed to pure disk is the built in hardware compression and ease of administration. We love tape libraries because ArcServe handles the tape movement, with the rotation it knows to put fulls in one tape...

    ArcServe and VTLs/Tape Libraries

We're looking to implement a VTL and Tape Library into our backup environment. In order to push enough data to maximize the thruput on the VTL, it looks like we'll need multiple backup servers with several GigE network cards in them. Does anyone else have a similar setup, or have any thoughts...

How to define a weekly cleaning job?

I agree with rwmastel. I can't remember where I read it, but regular cleaning of tape drives is damaging to the drives themselves. Companies that regulary clean their tape drives have more tape drive failures than companies who only clean the drives when the clean light comes on. I think it...

    PCI compliancy and backups..

Does anyone know a good site for backup information in regards to PCI and CISP compliancy?

    Media remaining report..

Unfortunately the media remaining capacity is not one of the options selectable in the report writer. We use all HP LTO drives, and these support that feature. Thanks for the reply, I'll keep looking and post anything here if I find it.

    Media remaining report..

We have good reporting on the status of the backup severs, such as thruput, success/failure, size, ect. The one thing I would really like to keep track of is the Media Remaining line that only seems to appear in the BrightStor activity log. It seems that this information would be really useful...

Is there an easy way to export a list of all jobs?

Thanks for the reply vschumpy. I'm currently running v11 on all but one backup server. I've tried using the custom report writer but can't seem to find a way to simply give me a list of the jobs in the queue. It will give me detials on the sessions, but its not what I'm looking for. Plus, it...

Is there an easy way to export a list of all jobs?

I'm looking for a way to export all the jobs that we have set up and what they are backing up. I'm not looking for details of the backups, just a simple list of which servers we have jobs for and what drives/directories are being backed up on each server. We have an application that keeps all...

    BrightStor v11 Central Database

Is anyone using the Central database feature of BrightStor 11? I like the idea of keeping the databases in one central location instead of spread out on each backup server. However, I'm concerned at the total size the central database could take up as well as its functionality once it gets...

Upgrading to Brightstor ARCserve release 11

So far I have upgraded 7 of our backup servers from BrightStor v9 to BrightStor v11, here are my tips on a successful upgrade: 1. Uninstall v9: Uninstalling will get rid of the \DATABASE folder, but I have had mixed luck with the existing v9 databases when I upgrade to v11. Because of this...

cant delete old groups in device configuration

Try moving both devices from the "Groups" box to the "Available Devices" box. Right now they are assigned to a group so you can't delete them. If you move them to "Available Devices" you should be able to delete them.

    Brightstore 9 backup help

Don't use a rotation scheme. Do a Custom Schedule, and choose "Day(s) of Week". Simply select Monday through Friday, and then when you do full backups it won't overwrite (unless you choose it to overwrite in Options\Backup Media. I backup a lot of servers and I don't use a single Rotation...

E3151 Unable to list server drives.

How are you creating the jobs? Are you creating this as a Network backup or an Agent backup? If you are creating the jobs as an Agent backup, try drilling down the Network tree and make sure you can see your servers. If you can, choose the same server you were trying to back up and try to...

    Backup Strategy

technical1, how often you should backup your server for disaster recovery is very subjective. There are several factors involved, such as: - How critical is the system to your day to day operations? - How limited are you in terms of backup space (whether you are backing up to tape or disk)? -...

    Arcserve 11???

I have it installed on four of our backup servers and so far have been happy with it. There were a few growing pains however. All the v11 servers were upgrades from v9. I ended up having to completely wipe out all the databases in order to get it to work properly. After I did that we're...

    Dallas/Ft. Worth users group?

Does anyone know of a BrightStor ArcServe users group that meets in the DFW area? I've been involved with previous groups for the AS/400 and found that they were a great tool to discuss trends and current strategies. If there isn't a current group, would anyone out there be interested in...

    BS 11 dbdefrag login problems

I answered my own question, and I'll post it here for anyone else who might be having a problem. I deletd \temp\*.* and \database\r*.* and after that everything started working good. Just an FYI for everyone.

    BS 11 dbdefrag login problems

I tried that and it didn't work mwalkdba. Here is what happens: I type: "dbdefrag -a -L casdb;admin;secret astpsdat" (no quotes of course) It replies: "Failed to log into server 'casdb',username 'admin': error -2005." (without the quotes). I verified that the server name is CASDB in the...

    BS 11 dbdefrag login problems

I'm also having issues with the database executables. I can't get any of them to work correctly. I'll run the "dbcheck -a asjob" and it will prompt me with "Enter Raima server name:" I have no idea what to type in on this. I looked through the other threads, CA's website, and the...
