Not that it makes any difference to you now you've moved to Win 2000 but in your old Start-Up files you had two instances of both LoadPowerProfile and Pointer - you only need one of each.
Thanks for the tweaks ;)
Sometimes (read as often) uninstalling Norton products doesn't completely remove all registery enteries and this can then cause problems on reinstalling operating systems.
Go to Symantec's site, download and run Rnav (for antivirus) or Rnis (for Internet security) from...
P.S.
Rebooting fixes the problem till next time. It appears to be a memory leak.
It's not just deleting - any large file transfer from one drive to another can trigger this hang and as you say once it starts - it just gets worse until you reboot.
It also affects your browser - you may find...
This seems to be an issue only with Win98 systems with IE6 installed. Apparently it's not a problem with IE5 or IE5.5 browsers. Haven't found a fix other than uninstalling IE6 and going back to IE5.5 (which am unwilling to do).
More info can be found in this thread...
Hi Vimalp,
Start -> Run -> type: msconfig -> hit Enter -> Startup Tab and untick any entries relating to fsqck. Click Apply and restart your computer.

Win98se. Sometimes when saving a .jpg file it will show as an untitled file (instead of file name) with the extension of bitmap (*.bmp).
Doesn't seem to be any particular reason - the previous file from the same set will show as a .jpg as will the following file. Have found sometimes changing...
Hi ski,
Virus definitions fully up-to-date. Full system scan two days ago - no viruses. Ran the IE repair tool through add/remove progams - Microsoft IE 6sp1.
No change to problem - not yet willing to uninstall and re-install IE & OE. Thanks very much for your input and helpful advice.
Hi...
Hi Richard,
Can only relate own experiences and recommend you install DirectX9 and Media Player9. The improvement in visual and audio quality of movies is simply outstanding.
Also recommend you install any critical updates and then be selective of other offerings as they apply to you.
So far...
Hi,
On some longer messages (particulary one's with several replies) the text just seems to fade out. Can still view the text when highlighting but otherwise not.
Win98SE, P3550, 256mb ram with 2.4gig free space on 15gig hd. No spyware (Spybot & Adaware). Any suggestions?

Ah, silly me - did misunderstand. I see, Auto Arrange works for for Large Icons, Small Icons ect but not for list or show details - got it.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Hi WheeDoggy,
Yes - that's correct - when viewing files either as a list or as show details, the option (under Arrange Icons) of Auto Arrange is greyed out.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Power Management->Advanced Tab "When I press the Power Button on my computer" Choose: Shutdown from the dropdown menu.
Do you still have Microsoft Family Logon in your Network Configuration? You need this to save your logon password.
Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network->Configuration Tab->Add Button->Client->Microsoft Family Logon.
You should now be able to save your password.
Your browser has been hi-jacked!
Download and install Spybot from http://spybot.eon.net.au/ and run this great little program and it will remove the offending registry entries for you.
Problem should then be solved.
Hi jmatt,
Wow lot's of useful links and information. Thanks very much - will check them out and advise tomorrow. Had a look at my applog and seemed ok except for one odd entry relating to ACDSee (viewer) which I deleted and taskmon didn't rebuild but the program still works fine.
G'day Phil...
Thanks again Phil,
Well tried that -improved to 71% - but still need those programs to connect to the net etc. So doesn't really change much.
I agree with you about Norton but I do like NIS features such as ad blocking and port protection.
Guess I'll just keep trying to find a way.

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.
Thanks for the wonderful advice already recieved since finding this forum two weeks ago.
In fact that's when my problems started. Completing housekeeping by uninstalling unused programs. One of them, ffdshow (multimedia codec), removed necessary system files...
