Thanks all. If I got an XP install CD does it have to be XP-SP3 like my corrupt computer is? Or can I use an earlier XP CD and still run a Repair using the keycode on my computer (as opposed to any that comes with the CD) like edfair says? If this works I assume I would then have to (should)...
I'm getting deep in the mud here, I know, but appreciate your all's help and indulgence.
I want to run System File Check on my Windows 2000 computer against a byte for byte copy (from Linux's dd command) of an XP boot partition from another computer. I know I won't be able to repair any bad...
Thanks.
How do you know if it is OEM? "OEM" is not in the key code nor anywhere on the sticker.
It's a Dell computer so by the normal definition it is OEM. But I always thought "OEM" in this instance refers to software Microsoft gave to the manufacturer for their internal use -- which they...
My XP won't boot and I have long since not had its Install CD. Through a convoluted use of my other computer, a Linux boot rescue CD, and a large portable USB drive I was able to run CHKDSK on a copy of the bad boot partition (chkdsk made a jillion corrections -- ran for 20-30 minutes), copy...
My wife's XP has a folder on the root drive called "copy of windows". It is not a copy of the Windows folder but a folder with that name containing 14MB in 8 subfolders and 90 files. Anybody know what this is for or where it might have come from?

My own reply. I found a registry program that I think works. It's called ERUNT, is free, and can be found at http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt .
It makes a backup of the complete registry and (by default) saves it in a WINNT (or WINDOWS) subfolder which is supposed to be...
I find it incredible (though not surprising) that I can't edit an email address in the Contact list without re-entering the entire address. Is there some secret way to do this? Or am I just missing it?? I'm using Office 2000. Thanks.

Just for fun, below is a copy from Microsoft public Forums from a [MVP]
"Don't import but connect to the file via
File-> Open-> Personal Data File...
If that doesn't work either, check the file for errors with scanpst.exe."

Ya know there are tons of other web pages that take great care to say Do Not Import; Use File-Open... But at your suggestion the Import works just fine -- all is home safe!
I've tried Import before; I'm guessing that my absent-minded mistake was not typing in the file name in the file box...
I'm finishing up a torturous re-install of W2000 including all updates. I reinstalled Office2000 including its updates (which are not easy to find at MS, btw), but I can't get it to use the old .pst file to recover my old messages and stuff. It is a good file (checked with SCANPST, etc), not...
I have a Dell Dimension 2350 running XP. I'm installing a new adaptor card. After the first step, to physically emplace the card with the computer OFF and unpluged, the computer will not start (power on). I reinserted and checked the power cord, pressed the start button a number of times and...
I'm starting to tackle a change of Profiles which requires Registry edits. I plan to back up the Registry since, as Windows says, a bad edit might make my system unnusable. My problem/question is: to restore a Registry or a System state, one has to get into the working Windows system which...
I'm going through a godawful reinstall of 2000, including SP4. Among other things it added "accounts" in Documents and Settings. Previously and now I have two users, one my name and the Administrator (though there may be three with profiles in Docs and Settings); Guest is and was disabled...
Thanks for the help. My understanding is that the Bart boot CD must be made on a clean system, not a system that is corrupted. That's because it will boot your operating system and takes OS install files off your computer (or install CD). This doesn't help my current situation but sounds good...
To make a long story short, I lost boot capabilities (any mode) with my WIN2000, have gone through all of the Repair options which finally entailed replacing a bunch of system files but got stuck with a corrupt registry (SYSTEM at least). I'm now trying a re-install but hoping to save as much...
