PROBLEM SOLVED (thanks also to TonyBose).
It was a simple error in the boot.ini where it should have read:
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\winnt
My file read:
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
It was pointing to the deleted OS! After...

I had a dual boot system with 98 on the C: partition and 2K on the D: (actually 2 separate drives). While trying to manually uninstall some Norton stuff, I hosed the registry on the 2K a bit.
Next I tried reinstalling the 2K, but made the mistake of doing it while logged into 2K (I...
There is something in the win2k registry about "mounted drives" or similar. I am running win98 here, so can't look it up. Anyway I was at work and tried to test a questionable drive out by adding it to my system. It ended up changing my C: drive to the E: drive, and after I took the...
Thank you both for that response. I assume that when disabled, the system restore volume becomes accessible by the virus cleaning software, and can be cleaned also. Hopefully the files there don't have to be deleted though, since I'm not sure how they could be replaced?
A friend presented me with a question about what may have caused his problem. Apparently after installing some type of system scan (or virus scan) software "similar to Symantec's", the Windows 2K PC acquired a problem where the Syslink network adaptor quit receiving. He thinks it...
Try going to www.msn.com and linking to hotmail from there. I know of people who couldn't open hotmail using www.hotmail.com but could link there from msn. I have no clue why this would be.
[pipe] I sent the guy home with Rockerfelerz' tip and a few other things to check out last night and he found the problem. Somehow the video hardware accelleration had been lowered to half scale. Turned it back up and no problem.
I appreciate the input, Rocker, even if it wasn't his...
A friend can't get his DVD software to run. He recently upgraded from Win98 to 98se. For some reason there was no Direct-X on his system, so I had him download and install DX v8.1 from the MS Web site. Apparently his video card is setup and working ok, he can set high resolutions, etc. I have...
[pipe] Ok, my friend wrote down the URL for the offending homepage and brought it to work this morning, and from a quick Google search I determined he has the [love2]VBS.ILoveYou.C virus.
Here is the URL: http://www.skyinet.net/~angelcat/skladjflfdjghk...q4w/WIN-BUGSFIX.exe I removed...
OK, I'm going to have him run NAV tonight and if it finds nothing, then I'll send him to the Norton site for the SirCam check. Thanks, and I'll post our results.

A friend here at work presented me with this problem he acquired over the weekend. Apparently while browsing he clicked on a link that changed his homepage (he had no specific info; I'm having him write it down and bring it in tomorrow).
The link to that IE homepage is an .exe file, which he...
[flip] onedetent,
Sorry, I've been off or busy for a few days. Anyway today I tried a couple of your suggestions, with positive results!
I made the registry change, from 400 to 20, with no perceptible change; the dropdown animation still unusably slow. Since I know the disk is reasonably...
I would try another CPU, because yours is probably damaged. If money is tight, you can get any old CPU as long as it is compatible with the mobd; or borrow one.
If anyone wants to continue this thread just for discussion's sake, maybe they could explain how to control or fine tune these dropdown menu animations ... or if they are tweakable at all! I have a fast computer and can't believe that they have to run so s.l.o.w.
Thanks again Anne, I won't...
[medal] Thank you Ann! The option was set to "random". I changed to none and the problem is gone! Apparently you can make this change in any Office program and it affects them all, because Excel and the others are also now OK.
