A friend can't get his DVD software to run. He recently upgraded from Win98 to 98se. For some reason there was no Direct-X on his system, so I had him download and install DX v8.1 from the MS Web site. Apparently his video card is setup and working ok, he can set high resolutions, etc. I have no idea what model the display adaptor is, it came with a couple of years old Gateway.

So anyway his problem is with WinDVD 2000, from InterVidew, Inc. It installed fine, no errors or anything. But when he tries to run a DVD movie he gets the message Create Overlay Failed. Please Lower Your Screen Resolution or Color Depth and Try Again. .

After changing his screen resolutions and color depths to numerous settings, he still gets the error. Any ideas?

Had the exact same problem. See if there are settings for dual display under display properties /settings/advanced, and make sure that the monitor that's being used is the primary display and no others are selected. The machine I had the problem on was a toshiba laptop, the user had two displays set , they were both listed as the same one but #2 was selected as primary, and when he tried to use windvd he got the "create overlay failed " message. selecting the first one solved the problem. you might have to play around with the setting a bit but I'll bet it is something similar

[pipe] I sent the guy home with Rockerfelerz' tip and a few other things to check out last night and he found the problem. Somehow [red]the video hardware accelleration had been lowered to half scale. Turned it back up and no problem.[/red]

I appreciate the input, Rocker, even if it wasn't his problem 'cause I can add it to my "knowledge base" and it might come in handy on a similar problem in the future.

Applies to W2003 as well YoMax - bet you never expected a Thanks for this after all this time.

This has been winding me up for weeks!
