Are there any static routes configured on the Server? IF unsure post the "route print" output here. If i understand correctly you're initiating the pings and telnets from a device on a different IP network than the server. Do you get the same results when pinging and telneting from a device on...
If you decide to use Hyperterm, go a step further and use putty, Tera Term, or SecureCRT. Each of these can do what HT does and are a lot more powerful and user friendly.
If you're getting a media disconnected message from ipconfig you need to check the physical. However, be aware that your computer might have mulitple physical and virtual interfaces listed in ipconfig. Be sure you that the media disconnected message you are seeing applies to the actual interface...
Check your local hosts and lmhost file.
Check the applicable reverse lookup zone for invalid entries on your DNS server.
If all else fails use nbtstat and nblookup (MS download) to troubleshoot further.
First rule of troubleshooting teamed nics is to diable the teaming and test again. Once de-teamed clear arp entries and test again.

Be advised however, that some orgs have policys against using split tunnelying.

Kerneldead,
If you had speed and duplex issues you'd see you'd see incrementing errors on your interfaces.
I definetly agree with the /24 or /25. However, if you really don't want to change masks u can leave them as is and configure your scope to hand out only /24 or /25 addresses. Then i would use security mechanisims like ACL's or firewall rules to prevent any traffic from the /16 minus the allowed...
