Ok, first off I am an end user who is not very technically inclined (I am not a good speller so forgive any typos :), so please try to keep the responses or resolution steps in simple terms for me to understand. :) My Dell Inpirion 6400 laptop has Windows XP 2005 on it. I also use VOIP. I somehow lost my IP connection after I tried to do a ipconfig /release, ipconfig/renew, due to the fact that I lost internet connection. The kicker is there is an internet connection because I was ablel to get the VOIP working so the phone worked, but I could not get a web page to load. The message stated cannot find server. So the last thing I saw in my ipconfig was 0.0.0.0.0. Then I saw something stating that my IP address was expiring on 7-17-09. Well now I cannot pull up an ip address at all, release or renew, and I'm getting a message in ipconfig that states: Media State....Media Disconnected.

Also I tried manually entering my last known IP addresses in Network settings for the Network Adapters.

I was about to try to reinstall XP, but I know that there is an internet connection because I've tried a different laptop which is what I'm using to send this message.

Any ideas as to what I need to do. Again I am pretty amature and am at a loss as to how I can restore the IP connection.

Thank you.

Gina

Do a google search for IP reset and read the MS article on using it.
Should help you out.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

If you're getting a media disconnected message from ipconfig you need to check the physical. However, be aware that your computer might have mulitple physical and virtual interfaces listed in ipconfig. Be sure you that the media disconnected message you are seeing applies to the actual interface you are troubleshooting.

I assume you are using the same cabling when testing the failed and working computer?

Please describe your physical connectivity. Specifically what does the computer connect to. You also mentioned VoIP. Are we talking about VoIP service from a cable company?
