I was recently told that Hyperterminal (W95 to XP) could be used "like pcAnywhere" to connect remotely to an industrial control system to control, and monitor from afar. I'm very familiar with pcAnywhere, but not so much with Hyperterminal. I always thought Hyperterminal was for file transfers and had awkward black screens with a lot of numbers and modem strings ? Any comments on using Hyperterminal for connecting to industrial HMIs and PLCs? Thanks!!

Depends on what the remote device is going to present to you.

Hyperterm accepts text from a remote system over a communications line and paints it on the screen and takes text from your keyboard and sends it to the remote device.

PCA accepts commands to display the the graphics of a host system on your local screen and transmits the signals from your local input devices to control the remote system.

If you decide to use Hyperterm, go a step further and use putty, Tera Term, or SecureCRT. Each of these can do what HT does and are a lot more powerful and user friendly.

My last few years have been with command line on unix boxes via TinyTerm from Century Software. It is capable of 232 (serial line or modem) or tcpip.
