Hi. I have a Xerox Workcenter M940. I can't print to it. It prints out garbage! I cleaned and aligned the printhead. I print out the test page. It is fine. What else can be wrong? It is attached to XP Pro and it was working fine before (I do have the XP driver).

Thanks in advance.

I have a workcentre 940. It worked fine for me for a while then for some unknown reason it stopped. It may have been a service pack or something but I have no idea. Now I reinstalled windows (with all the SP's) and it still doesn't work. The test works fine but when I try to print it either doesn't respond and my SPOOLSV uses up 99% of resources or it just prints smudges on the top left side of the page (no letters or anything that looks like anything). I am at a loss of what to do, if you or anyone else found a fix, Tell me!!!

Xerox's website doesn't have anything helpful. Mine prints smudges on the top left side too. I am suppecting is the printhead but don't know if i should invest anymore $$$ on it if I am not getting support from Xerox. My yellow and maganta stop printing too. This is driving me crazy, maybe I should just get a new printer.

rytl, your problem sounds just like mine, I don't think it's the print heads, b/c the test page prints out fine. I do have the W2k drivers and like yours it doesn't work. I have noticed that spoolsv.exe takes up 99% of resources when I am trying to print until I cancel the print job. It may be that the driver is not communicating with the spool properly, that's just conjecture and even if it is true I would have no idea how to fix it. Did you install and programs or service packs right before it stopped working? WinFax maybe?? any info may be helpful to me too. I am also looking to buy a new all-in-one but none of them on the market have good customer reviews, everyone says the software stinks on all of them.........

emk4200...

Mine is attached to a XP Pro. There is a patch for XP and I installed it when I first got the printer and it was fine.
I didn't adjust any setting and it just stopped working. If some of my color are not printer, is it the print head?
I do notice that sometime, ever when it is NOT on, the printhead moves. Powersupply problem? It is kinda scarey when you are sitting at the desk and the printhead just moved by itself. I don't know if this is related because this happens before I have this problem.

All-in-one machine... *sigh* I thought it would be so great. I don't need to buy a printer, a copier and a scanner. But now what do I get? only the copying part is functional... *sigh* I am thinking of getting a HP PhotoSmart printer and just leave this broken printer to be just a copier...

*sigh*

thanks.

Did you install Service Pack 3?? I have a friend who told me that SP3 could very well cause the problems I'm having, but there is no way to uninstall it. I may do a reformat and see what happens. I feel the same way about multifunction, huge potential, great hardware, but absolutly no excuse for the buggy software.

SP3 for XP??? I don't even know about that!!!

I don't know if there is an SP3 for XP I kind of guessed there was b/c some of the fixes in it had to do with the antitrust suit (I think). I don't know about the print heads and the lack of a single color, I assuming that the color tank is full and even so it doesn't print............ Sorry I can't be more helpful

I have Win2k Pro with SP3 and have the same issue with the M940. I called Microsoft, did some trouble shooting and it has been determined that the problem is the Xerox M940 driver. I called Xerox and they said m940 is unsupported. Sooooo....the driver needs to be tweaked or adjusted to work with SP3. I asked for source code and they said no and really didn't care that we have this problem. Sorry to say until someone trouble shoots the driver source.....

I finally got mine to work. The problem was the driver and SP3 (W2k). I went to xerox.com and downloaded the driver for XP and after one error while installing the driver, the machine works perfectly. You need the original CD to install Pagis and the other bloatware.

emk4200, I am glad you got your problem fixed. Mine already have the XP driver but still, it doesn't work. Well, I gave up on the machine and will just use it to make copies from now on. I bought a HP digital camera and color printer kit and I am so happy with them. Quality is great and it only costs $175 @ Walmart.

Hi All,

I see your having some trouble. One suggestion would be to find out who manufactured the controller board in your machine. I cant be exactly sure but try Sharp or Samsung. Then match your model using photos from there website and try there updated drivers. This success rate resolves about 99% of problems as all printer companys share different parts some even different machines (re-bagged) they alkso develop there drivers at different speeds.

Happy printing !!!

I am also having a problem with the m940. I am running xp home - I installed the m940 with usb connection. It worked fine for several months. Then it became somewhat quirky - first the pagis scan button stopped working, but I could go to the command list and scan. Then I started to get messages that the printer was not available, but I could print from Word. Now the 940 diagnostic program just says it cannot contact the printer. I uninstalled the m940 software, downloaded the xp driver from the xerox site, and reinstalled the software - still cannot contact machine. I changed cables and usb port and still no help. I can manually copy, so machine seems to be ok. It does look like a software problem, but I am at a loss.

Mine isn't even making copies. It prints junk just like what it is now, a piece of junk! I got a HP deskjet 3420 now and it is great.

tyng98 did you recently install service pack 3 for win xp? did you do a clean install of xp or did you upgrade. SP3 for win2k gave me problems with my xerox, maybe that's it.

winxp only has sp1. emk4200, why would tyng98 install win2k sp3 on the xp?

don't know, but I had a buddy who was compulsive about that and even if windows update didn't get it, he would read all the news stories about what was released and install it. I once caught him before he tried to install a windows ME update on a win 95 computer, now he's progessed to XP but still hasn't learned I must have explained it to him 10 times, but his motto is, "you can never be too careful" I don't think he fully understands to operating system concept. I do suppose your right though, and that most user here are technically apt enough not to be total morons. So next time I'll keep in mind the venue when replying.

This seems to be an old thread, however I will throw this out for what it's worth.

I had the same problem with my Workcentre M940 (connected via USB - direct to root hub) on a Windows 2000 Pro SP2 system. The problem was absolutely tied to the installation of some Win2K critical updates/hotfixes which are probably included in Win 2K SP3. I did a test print before installation without any trouble, installed hotfixes, rebooted, and then could not print.

Inspired by EMK4200, I downloaded the Win XP driver and installed it after removing the previously installed driver. Everything seems to work now.

So am i reading this wrong?

putting the XP driver on a Win2k solve the problem?

Bilebalar,

Yes, it does sound strange to put a driver from ANOTHER OS on your system. In fact, I normally wouldn't do it.

I tried it because of the previous posts that you referenced. In my case I had an image of the hard drive taken with Powerquest Drive Image so the worst that could happen was to restore the image if it didn't work.

I took this up with Xerox tech support. Xerox is apparantly out of the home & small office machine business (as previously stated) and has all but disolved the group that supported these printers (?). The routine support is outsourced (and that company isn't going to update the driver).

In short, the Windows 2000 driver needs to be updated and I don't feel confident that Xerox is going to do it.
