Hi. I have a Xerox Workcenter M940. I can't print to it. It prints out garbage! I cleaned and aligned the printhead. I print out the test page. It is fine. What else can be wrong? It is attached to XP Pro and it was working fine before (I do have the XP driver).

Thanks in advance.

Try Xerox.com
Next to log in- type M940 - press search

Click on the first entry Workcenter M940- support

Type "drivers" in search for key word or phrase- search

Click on 2. How To Resolve an Incompatible Version of the Printer Driver Error Message

Go all the way to the bottom of page under Related Items and click on Run the Removal Utility

This will take you to the removal program and follow instructions- Good Luck- Hope it works for you

WHOA!

At long last - I found what I was seeking. I mentioned that Xerox had sent me a file in the past (long, long ago, in a far away place) to clean up their mess but I couldn't find it. I knew if I saw it again that I would recognize it.

Well, that just happened. The removal utility to which you just directed me (for Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP) is the same filename of the long, lost, utility (mNTRemve.exe).

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I am indebted to your patience!

Hey Everyone who has been having problems with the Xerox M940, Windows XP and the USB connection.

I have found a solution!

I have got my printer to work with XP and the XP driver from Xerox's website by using a parallel cable. The printer works as fast as before and works 100% (so far, finger crossed!). I can use all the features and there seems to be no problems at all.

More specifically I purchased a Belkin, IEEE 1284 Printer Cable (High speed, bi-directional. DB25 Male/Centronics 36 Male) Gold Series, 6' length, from buy.com.

They had a deal where the shpping was free and the cable cost about $13 (if anyone can find a better deal for the same quality cable then good luck!)

I know that this will not solve everyone's problems and you must check to see which connection your computer has for a parallel cable to get the right one (Buy.com have a Belkin cable online correct cable identifier for this, find it here: )

Well I hope this helps some people. I know for me it prevented me from going out and buying a new printer!

Hello again folks - here's a developement from my printing persistence with the M940. Specs - WIN2K, SP4, automatic updates.

I tried the parallel cable suggestion from above with no joy. This led to (whilst trying to start afresh) "incompatible version already installed" screen even after uninstalling from the regular progams/workcentreM940/uninstall menu. The key, i think in this instance, may be in pooh215's post of feb 10 above.

After running the Removal Utility file, then installing the XP driver followed by the M940 software disk and back to the USB cable.....all seems well! Scanning and photocopying were never a problem, but now printing (from C: or internet ) is possible!!

Again, i think the Removal Utility file from the xerox website was the key - remember to follow instructions and shutdown several times along the way. 'sgotta be worth a try!

Good luck, and if this post ends up jinxing me.....!!!!!

What can I say,

Had all the problems described above for days, nearly binned the M940. Having done some searching and found you guys, I've installed the XP driver and all is well. Thank goodness you people exist,

Many many thanks for the help offered

Regards

Simon

My Xerox M940 stopped printing magenta. How do I know if it is the fuse anomaly or if I need to remove and clean the entire cartridge? The last page I printed switched to pure black and white half-way through. I've been using mine with Window ME.

The only other problem I've had before was it occasionally refusing to be recognized by the pc. I fixed that with an answer from another board. Pull the plug. The M940/M950 has an inherent problem with locking up when a print job is cancelled. To reset the printer you have to unplug it and plug it back in. Shutting it off doesn't clear the problem.

I bought my Xerox M940 brand new back on my Win 98 days It came with a CD that has the drivers up to Win 2000. All being good I decided to switch to Win XP "Bad Idea" but I already had wipe my Hard Drive so... I went to the Xerox Web site looking for drivers for the New Windows version ( XP ) and I found them. Good I said. Run the install Program and great it works. It was my belive that doing automatic updates was a good thing, after all microsoft knows best of what is good for your computer right?

WRONG as many if not all windows default drivers they don't provide support for specialized devices ( Scaner - Copier - Printer ) they came up with a solution for "USB Printing Support" ( POS ) witch takes over the xerox drivers and makes it imposible for the xerox communications monitor to find the xerox M940 so... simply removthe through device manager right?

Well ... not quite The problem with just removing it with device manager is that after you reset your xerox M940 it will use the USB printing support provided by microsoft againg and againg so what do you do... after hours of research and headakes here is my solution

NOTE: you may not want to remove USB printing support if you have any other USB printers that might be using it.

first disconnect power to your xerox M940 ( you may want to keep the USB cable hooked up just for ease ) remove the drivers to your xerox M940 using the uninstall utility provided reboot as requested.

Now have you ever wonder how Win XP knows witch drivers to install. Well Once you have install the OEM ( Original Equipment Manufacturer ) Driver Windows keeps a .INF file and a .PNF file in the C:\Windows\inf\ folder. Well remove the USBprint.inf and USBprint.PNF from there( you can just move them if you like for back up ) then install the Xerox Provided Driver pack for XP reboot as directed. with the computer off plug all the cables to your Xerox M940 as directed and turn on your PC. follow the install procedure and TA - DA!!!

If you run into problems let me know

I've never believed in forums but I think this was really needed. please let me know if it helps you!!!

Wow! I didn't think there might be that many of these Xerox printers still working. Has anyone been able to get theirs to work after the ink quit flowing?

To everyone who have problems with the M940 not printing colors or black & white. I got this tip from someone at Xeroxs' support staff. Remove the print head and ink reservoir. Cut a paper cup or some other container and add some ammonia based cleaner (windex is great) so that the printer carrige is resting on the sides while the actual printer head is suspended in the liquid. Wait about an hour, clean off liquid and replace and run clean print head utility several times until ink is flowing. I've done this about 3-4 times and the printer is still working fine.

Message to YourFriendlyUser - Your solution sounds great but since I've been in this forum- I've bought a new Epson C84 which is working fine. My M940 is still working great- all features (printer, scanner, and copier) on my older computer running Windows 98. I've saved your post and sent it on to a tech guy at Xerox. Thanks- Rich

I bought my M-940 brand new, what a mistake! It lost communications all the time with my Windows 95 and now my Windows 98 Se. At first it would not print from the Internet, then it printed crooked on the page, then I had ink problems, now It was printing ok but It would not scan. It kept on saying there is no communication to Pc, but It printed. I tried to uninstall It again (only way to get it working), now I can't not even from add/remove programs, cd is now useless, can anybody help?

Paul,
I only know how you might fix some problems. When you "lose communication". It tends to be the fault within the printer. The recommended (or only) way to reset the printer is by physically pulling the plug. Power off won't help. Even the uninstall wouldn't fix it. The problem lies within the printer itself. I finally realized that mine was consistantly losing communication if I halted a job while the pc was sending it. I am running it with Windows ME.

How did you fix your ink problems? I only have the ink problem now. The cheapest fix may be a new printer?

On a more general subject with the beloved m940, has anyone experienced the workcenter just suddenly die? Plugged in to a good power outlet the machine does not so much as blink or whirr : totally dead. The cable has not seen any action bar laying on the soft carpeted floor! The only "coincidence" to this event is my black ink level was REALLY low - surely that is not the problem. Any accessible fuses inside that we know of? Suggestion please (apart from the boat anchor one!!)

hello, i have to install an m940 on winxp and downloaded the drivers from xerox. but i need the original cd which i do not have anymore. can someone send me an iso?
would be very helpful!

thx in advance, jimmy

I also need the original CD for the M940. I had given up on getting this doorstop working again, but you've given me new hope. Would someone please send me a zip of the original "useful software" included with this beast? Thank you so much!

bellison from 9/27/03 mentioned a printhead cost of $245. I have purchased new printheads for $44.97 from the following site:
They have worked well.
My M950 will not work with XP SP2 either, but it will work with XP SP1. I am anxious to try some of the ideas posted here.

I have just received an xerox WC M940 from a friend, but he has lost the original software cd. I tried to download the XP driver from the xerox webpage, but it still won't work. I tried the printer and an USB port. Could anybody help me to find the original software or does anyone have a solution to get it working?
Thanks

to helpmyxerox,
You didn't say which operating system you have. I have XP home and when I upgraded to SP2, my printer quit working. I was using a USB connection. I tried all the suggestions in this string including deleting some USBPrint files as suggested by YourFriendlyUser. Nothing worked until I switched to the parallel port. You must use an IEEE1284 bi-directional cable such as Belkin F2A046A. I had a Belkin F2A032 which looks the same but is IEEE non-compliant. It didn't work until I tried the new cable.

To TheRealPundit

Thanks for replying
I have XP home edition. So you're telling me it will never work on the USB port? 'Cause I wanted to hook it up to my laptop and that does not have a parallel port. Could I still use a cable that goes from parallel to USB? And I do not need the software? How do I check what kind of parallel cable it is?
Thank you

To helpmyxerox

Some people in previous responses above indicate they were able to get the USB port to work, but I couldn't. It may be that Microsoft updates after Service Pack 2 have caused the problem. I too have a laptop I wanted to print from. I solved that problem by installing a home network with a netgear hub. Now I can print from the laptop when hooked to the network. I don't have any experience with a parallel to USB cable. You don't need the software disk if you do a compact install. You just need the driver from xerox.com uswxp124.exe. To check what kind of cable you have, see if there is a brand and model number and then go to their website and try to look it up. Or do a google search with the model number or the CircuitCity.com site. If not, I don't know any easy way to tell.
