The story I heard was that the name came from Blondie's song "Rapture".

Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars

Secular music? That's an interesting (if rather odd) concept.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Secularity (adjective form secular) is the state of being separate from religion.[1]

Of course, when I say secular, I'm not just saying anything with no religious connotations, but rather any music that does not honor and glorify Jesus Christ. I suppose that's plain enough. [wink]

The christian music business is just as corrupt and two-faced as the secular music business.

I used to listen to a LOT of Petra, Amy Grant, Ferrel & Ferrel, Dino, Michael W. Smith and Carman (Esp. "Lazarus come forth"... saw him in concert... it was awesome).

I realized the two-faced attitude when they stopped playing Amy Grant on the christian rock station, because she had "gone to the dark side", because her new album was about LOVE instead of about JESUS.

I continue to listen to Amy Grant, I love her voice and her stylings. I was surprised that they didn't do the same thing to Michael W. Smith though... his song "Old enough to know" wasn't about religion/christ at all.. it was about teenage pregnancy.

Thanks, I know the definition of secular. Greg's probably right about the corruption and two-faced aspect, as anyone listening to Genesis' 'Jesus He Knows Me' will be aware.

I would only say that surely peoples' ability to transmit their message (whatever it might be) through music is surely god's (and through him Jesus') work and therefore worthy of consideration?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

old school rap was fun, just pounding dance rhythms with silly lyrics like Grandmaster Flash, Neucleus, Will Smith and others. It's the angry, mysogonistic lyrics (I really don't care how the rapper is "making it REAL") that add nothing to the genre other than promoting violence & moral decay.

We're fortunate to have gangsta rap as a means for artistic expression because there's a multitude of words that rhyme with b*tch and ho and not many other genres are going to welcome them with open ears ... ha ha ha!

I would think the most likely reason they stopped playing her songs was because she had an affair and then divorced her husband; thus no longer a good role model. I know several Christian bands that have released songs that are about "secular" topics yet are stilled played on Christian radio.

An aside to KJV - I do not think being a Christian precludes one from enjoying "secular" music. There is music that speaks about the human condition and experience that I very much enjoy.

vanka25 - I couldn't agree more.

I just love music - I trained as a violin teacher. Handel was not an especially well-behaved or well-intentioned gentleman in many ways, but I would stand by "The Messiah" as an incredible piece of music.

I'd say you'd have to include Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. An amazing amount of (spoken) words in under 3 minutes...from 1965:

Johnnys in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
Im on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says hes got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
Its somethin you did
God knows when
But youre doin it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phones tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early may
Orders from the d. a.
Look out kid
Dont matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Dont try no doz
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You dont need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
Youre gonna get hit
But losers, cheaters
Six-time users
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin for a new fool
Dont follow leaders
Watch the parkin meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Dont steal, dont lift
Twenty years of schoolin
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Dont wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Dont wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump dont work
cause the vandals took the handles

willif:

I have a violin. I know now what it sounds like when you rub a cat and a horse together.

But I digress.

I would *love* to be able to play the violin... I can tune it, I can play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", but the main problem that I have is that after playing guitar, and furthermore bass, I have a hard time keeping my fingers that close together! <LOL>

Itty-bitty fingerboard on those things....

It's true Greg.

But keep going! It'll be worth it in the end.
