Recognised UNIX & Oracle Certs..

Hi All,

I've been in the industry for 8 years , and although I've a wealth of experience in the field I find that certs and qualifications would be great accompniment to it.

Having done my CNA , I'm currently undergoing my MCSE Win2000 ( NOT through a boot camp! ) and I've also managed to get my Financial Director to open the purse strings a little for training.

Because of this I need to know if there are any globally recognised UNIX certs that I can do in the UK. Also , I'm a relative newbie to Oracle - so what would be the best place to start with it - Ie: Course , Qualifications ?

Any input would be appreciated.

I am an Oracle Certified DBA. I'm currently certified in Oracle 8, and will be certified in 8i and 9i by years end. I first learned Oracle the hard way, by hands-on experience, back in 1994. My advise to anyone wanting to become certified is the following:

Never pay for Oracle Course Training out of your own pocket, expecting that the eventual certification will give you immediate returns. I would allow my employer to pay for the training (if you do not mind a one-year contract) and also have them pay for the exams.

If you work for a company that has an Oracle License, get their CSI number a immediately create accounts on OTN.ORACLE.COM, METALINK.ORACLE.COM. These sites are by far the most useful for learning oracle. Why? Because you can download trials software for Linux (A free operating system) or Windows and learn to build databases. This will get you some good hands on experience. If you do not work for a company that uses Oracle, you may have to think about your reasons for wanting to learn it, because most companies require DBAs that have job experience with the product.

Practice, practice, practice (with your downloaded Oracle software).

Buy the Osborne Oracle Press books on certification (US$150). And read them cover-to-cover, do not skip a chapter. Then buy the practice exams. But you can not become certified by simply reading, you must have hands-on long term experience, because the exams are senario-based.

Did certication get me an immediate raise or recognition? No. But when I apply for new jobs, it definitely is a plus.
