Yes, there should be something better than spellcheck.
The people who run this site, might have a little more time to correct some of the quirky lingo that is used by newb's.
I do not want to decipher, If I know what the problem is, I can best effect a course of action to ensure your completion. Ambiguity is the enemy.

I'm bumping this to the top since I miss the fun (and the catharsis) that this thread produces.

Do any of you "reach out" to colleagues or potential clients on a regular basis? I have a manager that seems to think she needs to reach out to anyone she needs to contact; by telephone, snail mail or regular mail.

Very irritating to hear in almost any conversation with or around her. GRRR

Actually.

I have a co-worker that uses "actually" at least 2 or 3 times in each sentence. It's actually quite annoying and I actually have not figured out to actually let him know that he actually gets on my nerves. Actually.

Basically I would like to agree with you on that one, only basically the problem, basically, with my colleague is, basically, the over use of the word "basically".

I had been taught to say "by accident", or "accidentally" or "it was an accident" when I was asked how the last cookie disappeared.

I hear people saying "on accident".

"Im sorry, I deleted the table on accident".

It drives me crazy.

I believe that cookies disappear by Tools...Internet Options...General...Browsing History...[Delete]...(Cookies) [Delete Cookies].

Therefore, IMHO, the last cookie disappears, not by accident, but rather via several intentional steps. [smile]

What if you do something intentionally by accident? (Like when I intentionally by accident dropped something on the floor for the dog.)

Literally...

No, no, no - cookies disappear in the middle of the night. Along with the last glass of milk. And the empty milk container is left in the fridge, and the empty cookie container is left on the kitchen counter.

It is intentional, however, no one in my house will admit guilt!

Along with many of the phrases mentioned already, i'm having particular loathing for 'It's all a bit political' at the moment.

Nothing to do with politics you understand

Seeing 'COB' above reminds me of the variant here on Airstrip 1 - 'COP' - Close Of Play, as in a game of cricket.

Still, at least it has some history I suppose.

Happy New Year, 'BTW' (another personal annoyance).

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Ahhh, many great annoyances mentioned.
The link in the original post has been updated for words banished from 2007.
I highly agree with a few from there.
Post 9/11 definitely needs to go.
Mentioned above and also in the list,
"It is what it is"
As one submitter mentioned about that phrase:
"It accomplishes the dual feat of adding nothing to the conversation while also being phonetically and thematically redundant."
Just in case, another link to the list:

That also happens to be the college I graduated from. ^_^

My daughter explains pronunciation to me: Each word in the English language is pronounced exactly as spelled, in the original language before English started using it.

I would like to get a definite ruling on what the "Midwest" is and why, since there is a Midwest, is there no "Midnorth, Mideast, or Midsouth" in the US?

The ax/aks vs. ASK thing has always bothered me. I've even heard this on integrated voice response systems on telephones.

One afternoon I saw a pickup truck with a large sticker on the back window that read: "Your eating my dust!" I laughed out loud at that - talk about advertising ignorance.

:)

I agree with many here... The ones I find most irritating are misuse of they're/there/their and your/you're, plus the overuse or rather misuse of "like".

What bugs me the most is people who talk in questions when recounting an event or trying to describe something. As in "I was standing? On the corner? And then this guy? Walking a dog? ..."

That slight rise of inflection at the end of every statement seems to imply that the person speaking to me thinks I cannot comprehend any type of narrative.

Here's are a couple more:
- there is only one "anyway" not "anyways"
- It is correct to use "these" or "those" vs. "These ones" or "Those ones"

I also think that "You know what???" is way overused. Especially because it is usually posed to someone who does not "know what".

OK. Enough said.

"I am sick and tired of being told that ordinary right thinking people in this country are fed up with being told they are sick and tired" - Monty Python.

Fullest Potential"... Fullest presumably meaning fuller than 'full'?

Even "Full Potential" is redundant.

Stuff. Pure ambiguity. Could be anything."I know stuff"
"I got stuff" "I need stuff"
"For all intents and purposes"
Yeah, why are northern states like Michigan {my origin} and Wisconsin, Minnesota called "Mid west"?
Well, because there were few states past the Mississipppi river at the time, so everywhere was "west" beyond there.
As a left coaster now, I consider anything to the right of Texas, "east". {Are'nt quote marks passe?}
Oh! Another one: "So last year"
Sigh,,, I am so, like yesterday!

Hey, all! I'm wearing out my scroll bar getting to the latest post. Think we could start a 2008 version of this thread? ;-)
