I have a Compaq Presario 7470 running Windows 98 Se. The other day I defraged it with Diskeeper and started having troubles opening web pages. I connect to the Internet OK, but my ISP web page doesn’t open and when I try to open my Internet Explorer it cannot find the page either! So I click Ctrl, Alt and delete to see what was wrong. It said that Iamapp was not responding so I closed it, but that did not do it. So I reopened the \close programs\ and now it says iexplore is not responding so I close that and then the Internet Explorer opens. Iamapp is for Norton Security. I don’t know what iexplore is. I have tried restoring Windows Explorer back to its previous version but that didn’t help. I tried un-installing Windows Explorer and reinstalling but that didn’t help either. So I went to C:\\ Windows \ options \ cabs \ setup.exe to reinstall Windows 98 without fully reinstalling. This did not solve the problem either.

Below you will find what Close Programs as listed.
1. Explorer
2. Iam
3. Navapw32
4. Msnmsgr
5. iexplore.exe
6. Systray
7. Rnaapp
8. Iamapp
9. Carpserv

Navapw32 and Iamapp always say “not responding” first and I used to close them first but that never help until I closed iexplore.exe then my Windows Explorer will open without reclicking to open. So I quickly started closing iexplore.exe first then everything opens fine and have no more troubles.

Can you help fix this without doing a full reinstall?

Sincerely,
Robert

I don't understand! There is no porn on my tool bar. there is nothing but what is supose to be there. What ever this is will not let be access IE. I think it is IE freezing up after reboot.

Yes and also restore back to a previous issue. Nothing like that worked.

Hmm.
I'm going to assume that you've run a full virus scan (using up to data definitions). If you haven't, do so.
Then, download, install, update, and run SpyBot. Remove items indicated in red.
Post back with results.

Get SpyBot here:

IE problems and Virus

Iexplore.exe is Internet Explorer
Explorer.exe is Windows Explorer

I have tried restoring Windows Explorer back to its previous version but that didn’t help.

You mean Internet Explorer.....only Iexplore (Internet Explorer) has this option....

It said that Iamapp was not responding so I closed it
It maybe blocking something viral and/or dangerous....
I'd consider looking down the viral path for infections

I tried un-installing Windows Explorer and reinstalling but that didn’t help either
You mean Internet Explorer...right?

It's important we get our terms together, so we all know exactly what we mean, that's all....

Do a virus scan with "updated" definitions

A couple of hints;
1. always be "offline" whenever installing/uninstalling programs
2. disable all AV virus scanning software when installing.....and better is to only have Explorer and Systray in "Close Dialog box".
3. scan suspect files "before" you run them....if they've been downloaded, on floppy, or are not from Manu.....then see #2

that botched Windows re-install doesn't sound very good

You can try and run Scandisk from DOS first
Restart in MS-dos mode and type Scandisk C:
hit enter
let it fix itself if asked
restart (CTRL+ALT+DEL) if necessary

Boot back into Safe-Mode
and run Scandisk from within Windows
it's a diff version than dos version

To get into Safe Mode
Press and Hold the CTRL key while POST and the Win98 Startup menu will appear
choose "Safe Mode"......not safe mode command prompt

Try the Repair tool in IE
Go Start>Run MSINFO32
tools>Internet Explorer Repair Tool
choose "repair", not restore to previous config
(you may have done so already)

D/L a fresh copy of IE from MS....
it'll take a few hours with dialup
you'll need a working PC, obviously,
this is why i finally ordered and now have a CD...do you?

Try to d/l the whole 20 MB or so and then burn it onto CD-R blank....
bring it to your PC and install.....
However, not sure if this will work, as MS makes you d/l an applet first (450kb or so)...
then you need to re-hook up to MS d/l site for full d/l (20MB or so)...
and they may, at this time, "take note" of the PC's GUID (globally unique ID)....
worth a shot.
lot of time though, unless DSL or cable

You may have viral/spyware/worm/trojan issues as well

Finally,
You can try re-installing Windows from MS-DOS mode

I am sorry I did restore back to IE 5 now and have no REPAIR available with 5. Also I forgot to say that when I shut down the is a prompt " program is unable to shut down and have choice - wait - end task now - cancel-. So some program is running in the background and sometimes when I am away there is a blank box in the task bar like there is a program open, but it is blank.

look here;
and

besides doubles of a couple things, i don't see much wrong in the log....
MSN messenger has been known for nightmares.....
You may want to try trillian, which does all major IM's at once.
Removing Msn messenger completely is a project in and of itself....yet can be done

I'd check Diskeepers website for any newly found probs they've fixed and/or incompatibilities or recent posts and updates from them also

TekTippy4U,
Thanks for getting back I sure do appreciate you and Carrr’s help. After long hours I have decided to restore and this time make a backup of my computer. After using Spybot things really started running slow. I don’t believe it was that, just some program was running in the back ground. I think your right about MSN messenger; I notice that when I sign off of the Internet that MSN messenger was trying to sign back in. So I uninstall it but that didn’t help what ever was running in the back ground. When I shut down the computer I would always get a prompt saying “program is not responding “and ask what I wanted to do; end task now, ignore.
Well, anyway I thank you all for your time.

Happy Holidays one and all.

A couple of tricks to help isolate the prob
Go Start>Run> MSINFO32
In the left pane; you'll see
Startup tab
Running Tasks
System Hooks

Use Start>Run MSCONFIG
In Startup tab
"uncheck" boxes to that you think maybe culprits...

You have a lot of running tasks, listed in your original post, that can access the Internet....most likely a conflict accessing for resources and/or at same time

I know from personal exp., Juno has it's own built-in key-stroke trigger, which runs an ads javascript/activeX control, whenever you start typing in the
'write email box'....I've managed thru much diligence and every iota of intell i could muster to subdue the beast, so far..it's a pain, but i work it....
Juno also uses that Rnaapp.exe file (Remote Network Access Application).

consider another ISP.
maybe try Surfbest or PeoplePc(i've heard some probs with PplPc)

try this at first for yourself to halt MSN messenger
Rename the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder to
MessengerOld

See if the prob goes away;

To Remove it completely Use the ControlPanel>ADD/Remove Progams area to remove it

One thing to remember is that if there is an infected file on HDD....a system restore may re-infect, especially if you've cleaned it and then restored

Also Outlook Express uses MSN messenger

Hoped i could've been more definitive, but I don't use any messengers or Outlook

i am also having a simlar problem. when i try to open ANYTHING to do with explorer (ex: internet explorer, windows explorer, "My Computer" etc...) the cursor loads the hourglass like it is going to load explorer, then the hourglass goes away. the system sits for about 45 seconds to 90 seconds. the page/folder/my computer finally opens. opening folders, once explorer is running, is like normal.

i have tried running spybot s&d, ad-aware multiple times, and also virus scans with multiple softwares. still the problem remains. i even did a "repair" installation of windows.

hope someone can help.
