A spin on the best Sitcoms thread...what are the best sektches or lines you know..

Amongst them has to be the lines from Blackadder goes forth.

Scene:
Blackadder is facing a courtmarshall. He's dim, side kick is called as a witness.
Goes along the lines of:

Blackadder, pulls Baldrick to oneside "Baldrick, deny everything"
"Are you Private Baldrick"
"No!"

"But you are Captain Blackadder's batman?"
"No."
"Oh, come on, Baldrick -- be a bit more helpful, it's me."
"No, it isn't."

True, Paul. I also love the 'comments' below the screen asking what the joke is!

Boom-tish as they say!

Funny thing is, the joke doesn't translate.... it's just german gibberish. ;)

Anyone ever watch "Whose Line is it Anyways?"...I believe the American version (with Drew Carey) was based off of a show from across the pond, wasn't it? That show impresses me...the quality of humor that these guys come up with on the fly is amazing...Improv rules!

Jeff Dunham - Arguing with myself"...he's a ventriloquist with several puppets, including Peanut. I've never laughed so hard in my life!

Anyone who believes that "Whose Line is it Anyway" is improv (versus pre-planned, pre-written humour), please contact me regarding some fine investment property that I have for sale in the Utah desert salt flats.

The interview topics that Jay Leno and David Letterman have with their guests are entirely spontaneous and off-the-cuff, as well.[rofl]

And how do you know this, Mufasa? Why would you want to bring me down like that anyways? I bet you're going to tell me that Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny aren't living in a plush condo in California with Elvis, aren't you?

I would never cast any aspirsions on [santa], now would I?[2thumbsup]

Mufasa...you didn't answer my first question. How do you know that "Whose Line is it Anyways?" is scripted (pre-planned, pre-written)? Did you read an article stating that, or is this just your opinion? I don't doubt it, I would just like to see something to back it up.

RJoubert,

My apologies to cast of "Whose Line is it Anyway?", and to you and others: After Googling to find anything of substance to back up what was my impression/opinion, I find nothing...in fact, just the opposite -- everything I find from Googling supports the notion that "WLiiA" is entirely improv/spontanteous.

I guess my erroneous assessment is, in a way, a compliment in that their work is so good that it makes skeptics like me think that it's scripted.[2thumbsup]

Only watched this show once or twice (very entertaining but not worth blocking out time for it) so I don't know if it's a "live" show or if it's taped but .......

I wonder how long the taping of each show is, so that the subsequent editting can compress the content to fit the 1/2 hr time frame and make the spontaneous improv seem more ingenious and wity than it appears.

Only a person who has sat in the audience of a "Whose Line Is It Anyway" taping could answer this.

Hey, mjldba, who you callin' "wity"?

I think 'Whose Line..' is to a large extent improv, but there is an element of prompting from the show's producer as to the 'line' to take. I've sat in on recordings of 'Have I got news for you' and some of the 'spontaneity' is spontaneous, other elements have to be teased out over the course of the two-hour-or-so recording.

HIGNFY is a great show, but some of the edits are visible.

Personal Favorite, when Roy Hattersley failed to show for the nth time, and they couldn't (or wouldn't) get a replacement, they subbed a "Tub of Lard" - he turned up the next time ;-)

As I recall, the joke was that Paul Merton would beat Ian Hislop even with a tub of lard as his assistant. I think he did.

>I've sat in on recordings of 'Have I got news for you'

I sat in on a couple recordings of Rory Bremner's show before it became Bremner, Bird and Fortune.

The Bird and Fortune head-to-head bit is definitely improvised in terms of dialog (although just as clearly there has been a minor amount of planning in deciding the topic they will be satirising, and the roles that they will be playing). Having said that, they record about 20 minutes of this which is edited down to about 2 minutes for transmission ...

Paul...What is CPAN? Did you mean CSPAN, or is CPAN a legit channel/show?

I once read that they record about 4 hours of material to get the 1/2 hour show. Whether that's all in one sitting, I don't know.

I used to rock and roll every night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find 30 minutes a week in which to get funky. - Homer Simpson

CPAN is the repository of Perl Modules which IMO is the greatest thing about a great language, loads and loads of already written and tested code ...

It's what put Perl out there as the best Programming Language, again IMO, but I'm sure other Perl Programmers would agree :p

<-- See for yourself

This shameless endorsement of the Perl Programming Language has been brought to you by the Number '7' and me :)
