Microsoft's anti-competitive actions trammeled the competitive process through which the computer software industry generally stimulates innovation and conduces to the optimum benefit of consumers."
U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson

This is a sad way to begin a new forum. I hope there are members of the Tek-Tips community who can stand up and defend the actions of the man who asked "Where do you want to go today?"

Without a doubt, Bill Gates heralded a revolution in the way we work. Has he helped us all? Has he only helped himself? I have mixed feelings and would appreciate some feedback to help me sort them out.

<a href= temporary Vorpalcom home page
Send me suggestions or comments on my current software project.

I'm not a Gates lover, nor a Gates hater. But, people seem to be missing the point of the whole anti-trust issue by combining the creation of the products (the thing most people like) with how they were sold (what most people despise).

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer were like the nail and hammer. Gates delivered an organization who could write code that solved people's problems. Ballmer was the hammer that drove in the business. Ballmer is your typical Type A American sales person who stops at nothing to make a sale. Gates' problem is that he never put the throttle on the guy.

So, now they both sit with a big lawsuit on their hand. I think Gates should own up and fire Ballmer. Maybe it's too late... Just my two cents.

Ghost

Competition is very good but competition that can stand up against the giant is very scarce. Very few companies are willing to dump the Microsoft family and head in different directions.

Software represents a critical portion of most companies' asset bases. The resources invested to support its continued use cannot be recovered. The snake bites its tail... no matter how flawed the present may be, who can abandon current policies, procedures, investments, etc, to chase the elusive dream of a friendly, cost-effective interface?

I guess the part of us that remains an "animal" will always lead us back to familiar water-holes. (Until the water evaporates and some reluctant anthropologist finds our bleached bones scattered around a dried circle of baked mud.)

InterruptX@excite.com
<a href= Contingency Implementation
Send me suggestions or comments on my current software project.

It seems to me like a classic catch22.
There are definately pro's and con's in this whole matter... yes, I personally think that it's wrong for one company, and indeed, one person to have so much money, so much power, and such a big say in the development of a revolutionary technology ie the internet, but it is only because bill got his foot in the door and people loved his products that he had such a brilliant base on which to build his empire! it's a bit like electric cars... they might be cheaper, they might be better, but who's going to take the leap first? we are so used to using an industry standard ie Microsoft, that no one is willing to move wholeheartedly to another OS - plus all the filling stations are for petrol cars! ie there isn't much support for other OS's and it all comes down to us.

ninety something percent of the world relies on MS for their OS. Until a few more people rely on something else, Microsoft will have a grip, but is that a bad thing? we all benefit from the integrated environment of windows....
