mp3 files are always linked. They are never embedded. Only wave files are embedded within the presentation and that too if their sizes are less than the size set up in "Tools" | "Options...", "General" tab, "Link sounds with file size greater than" box.

PowerPoint does not allow you to group placeholders. Placeholders are the shapes that have those "Click to..." kind of text and when you click, the text disappears allowing you to type. See if you are trying to group placeholders.
