Ok...Fixed the font issue by cutting Suitcase XI out of the equation and using Font Book to manage all 258 font suitcases (thought I only had about 65). It works great! I can see and use them now in Qxp without having to open Suitcase XI and activate. And Safari doesn't crash.
So now, it's just...
I'm so frustrated...I did a clean install of 10.3.4 coming from jag 10.2.8. I then installed all of my apps including my new Suitcase 11, but I can't get Panther, Qxp 6.1a and Suitcase XI, to play nice.
I set-up a folder on the HD with all of my purchased fonts (65 suitcases with about 700...
I can't begin to think what's causing that...so assuming that it just started doing this, I'd say you could try deleting the preferences. If you don't have extensive style sheet or print sytle settings, it would be an easy test.
Let me re-word that last post as I can't see anyway to edit. You will need to learn how to tile the page for a 100% print size which will out-put two A4 pages that you can trim-to-crop marks and tape together for a look see, or you can select 'fit to print' in the print dialoge window under the...
I'm not 100% sure I'm following this correctly, but for the image you want on top (the top layer) did you in QXP go up to Item and Modify and choose the tab Box and choose None (which currently may be "white")? Any way, play around with the settings in under each of those tabs like Run Around...
If I were you I would conduct one final test before giving up on futura.
The Concluding remark in the above referenced Apple Link covering Font Issues in OS X (I've pasted it below), suggest that you track down and eliminate all of the duplicate fonts on your system. Do a find for "futura" and...
Sorry, I can't offer any other solution...I've personally held off going to Panther until bugs like this one get worked out.
Between Panther, QXP 6.1a, Suitcase XI, PPD's, plus and assortment of specific fonts, there are just too many little nasty's to deal with.
So, it's 10.2.8 and QXP 6 with...
Sorry, misunderstood. You can delete any of the fonts you want...just keep the folder.
The fonts are added everytime you create a pdf with the 'embed all fonts' option selected which I'm sure you know is located under the Job Options Tab.
This link is a must read by all OS X / QXP 6 Users - and is particularly helpful for all you pre-press buds:

As for Futura, a few users in other forums have tested this problem and have been able to duplicate it using various machines, font...
Found this on MacFixIt Forums:
"While opening documents created by older versions, quarkxpress 6.x sometimes trhows up error -9589.
Here is how to get rid of Unknown error (-9589):
1. Go to Print Center (OS X Drive >Applications > Utilities).
2. Click Add

QXP 6.x doesn't work well on a Server workflow. This is a "know issue."
The work-around it to place the file on your desk top. Re-lable the server folder as "in use" or something like that so other designers don't open the file until your done.
When you are done. Save it on your desk top...
Go to quark.com and downloads and get the open publisher extension and put it in your extensions folder. Make sure you Quit quark before adding the extension.
Then using the hand tool and double clicking on an image, you'll be able to open publisher just like before.
No, that's a proportional resize for a picture/text box with in a layout. What I'm trying to say/do, is auto resize the whole desktop window that the QXP layout is in.
Like Safari or ID2, when you hold-drag the bottom window corner and make the whole desktop window smaller or larger, all of...
With ID2, when you have to change the size of your layout window, the ID2 layout will resize itself to the center of the window. Just like it does with Safari.
In case I'm not making sense here, it's just a matter of placing your cursor on the bottom corner of the layout window and click hold...
Can I trust the >File >Print >Bleed Tab, to define Bleeds for printers or publications using QXP 5 or 6?
Up to now, I have always dragged the Picture Boxes out into the Paste Board area to the amount specified by the printer or publications.
If the Bleed Tab settings work via Capture Settings...
I've heard the way to go is to bring the needed doc fully on to the machine you are using then save when finished and put the doc back on the server.
At least until 6.2...I guess...hopefully.
Yep, save first...but what I like to do is then create a new file on the desktop called whatevernameCFO and then when I select file and collect for output, I direct it to save to the new folder. This way keeps the confusion down and then if you need to down save the QXP doc, you can open it in...
