Have just upgraded from Q6 to Q6.1 on Panther. Was able to open Q4.1 files but since upgrading I am unable to open any 4.1 files giving me an error message of -9589. This happened to both versions we have. On calling quark they never heard of the problem. I think that it is a networking problem, for other single users are not having the same problem. Any suggestions

Hi - have had pretty much the same problem -

I think I resolved it in the end by reinstalling Quark and am pretty sure the Panther 10.3.3 upgrade ironed out the problem completely. I found out I was having a conflict with Suitcase (running X1) and worked around this by quitting Suitcase, opening the Quark doc, then launching Suitcase and resaving the 6 version immediately.

Found this on MacFixIt Forums:

"While opening documents created by older versions, quarkxpress 6.x sometimes trhows up error -9589.

Here is how to get rid of Unknown error (-9589):

1. Go to Print Center (OS X Drive >Applications > Utilities).
2. Click Add
3. Select "IP Printing" from the First dropdown.
4. Put in "127.0.0.1" as the Printer's address.
5. Click "Add".
6. Select 127.0.0.1 in the Printer List and click on Make Default.
7. Close Print Center.

Now try opening the Legacy quarkxpress documents in quarkxpress 6.x and they'll open without a problem.

Thanks for the tips.

Have been speaking to quark tech, they gave me the same code in the Print Centre, and hey it worked. Unfortunatly this solution is only a temporary one as I have to change printer settings to print every time. I have 100s of files that I must change and having to do it this way would take forever. If you have any tips on solving this problem, and its problem after problem with quark 6, it would be appreciated.

I haven't tried the Suitcase idea from bischerboy, but as with the print centre problem, it defeats the purpose of changing from 4 to 6. Life should be made easier when upgrading, not harder.

Cheers for your replys.

Sorry, I can't offer any other solution...I've personally held off going to Panther until bugs like this one get worked out.

Between Panther, QXP 6.1a, Suitcase XI, PPD's, plus and assortment of specific fonts, there are just too many little nasty's to deal with.

So, it's 10.2.8 and QXP 6 with Suitcase X for the time being here.

I hope others here keep the work-arounds coming for you though.
