It's been a long time that I am out of town,I don't know if you have done it already. Since you have the installation CD of sybase, try reinstalling sybase on the win2k server. make a shortcut of the engine with the previous parameters and DB path. and load the engine again.

I guess that the sybase database on the server is crashed. try rebuilding the database. and bytheway if the problem still persists (which i doubt) you may play with the server page size it would increase database performance too.

Sybase is free with some minor restrictions on linux operating systems. You can ask for adaptive server 12.5 or install it from www.sybase.com for the difference there always have to be adaptation on the new language that you get to know. it's all about time.

Is the performance problem coming from all tables access or just some of it or is it on peak times? you need to brighten the picture.

you can know the table comlumns from the system tables that are hidden in the database. To see all the table names check the SYSTABLE and to see the columns in any table check the SYSCOLUMN table.
