Hi pechenegs,
Thanks for that link--I never heard of vundo before.
I won't be able to give it a try though unfortunately, since the laptop has already been wiped but I'll save it for future reference.
Thanks again!
Well the person is just going to wipe everything now. I wanted to try RKR--I think that might've showed what was recreating the file entries that made it startup. oh well, probably a randomly generated trojan name.
A user reported popups that say his laptop is infected, click here to scan, etc. Ok sounds familiar.
A Hijack log shows only one suspicious file: the above named dll is always loaded at startup. I tried to remove it, but a rescan always shows it appearing again. I can't delete the file...
Just adding an update here to this rather bizarre incident. I'm finding that if I simply restart this computer, I will run into the problems mentioned above. Doing the system file check doesn't report problems but everything works fine again--until the next restart.
I'm going to check the...
Well I checked out the PC this morning and now IE is working again. Really strange. I haven't tried Windows installer yet though..I'm going to wait till a quiet day before I potentially break it again though.
I did the system file check and it didn't report any problems, but IE then worked after. Looked too good to be true, so I restarted and then it's not working.. oh well.
Tomorrow, I'm going to try those other things you suggested, linney--hopefully I won't have to do a repair install.
I have a dell PC that came with Sonic record now. I didn't like this program so I uninstalled it to put on Easy CD creator instead. Right off the bat, the install for Easy CD froze and I had to end task it.
Then I noticed IE won't start. Instead, I see the iexplore.exe process appear, but...
That Brother looks like it would be a good fit actually. It has fax, so I can just replace the existing stand alone fax.
Question about it's pdf scanning: can it run it's scan function right from the built-in control panel? Or do I have to install software (twain driver?) on each PC and start...
It will probably be used around 5 times per week (aside from the scanning work of the actual production users) but the thing is that the 5 times could be by a different set of users each week. It seems that the good solutions will be too expensive and the low volume makes any hardware purchase...
NOt sure if this is the best group for this, but here goes..
I'm in an environment where various users need to get a multipage document scanned and converted to PDF every now and then. We have a few scanners but they are used for actual production work and thus these users are inconvenienced...
I have a user running W2K with OE 6.0. Just recently, the entries in contacts list pane suddenly disappeared. By opening the address book, we confirmed everything was there, but nothing would show in the contacts pane; it was as if it was empty.
While looking atthe address book, I happen to...
I had FS2002 and played around a lot to get smooth frame rates. WIth an Athlon XP 2000+, 512mb ram and a radeon 9500 pro, it ran well at 1024x768 and high detail.
I didn't get to try 2004 too much but wIth a Duron 750, no video card you get will run FS2004 with even low details well. You...
Thanks for the suggestions. IT could be a combination of all of these. I scrolled further down the list and found even more similar referrers--over a dozen with a total of over 3000 referrals in the past week. Well I hope they go away soon..they're really messing up the stats.
This past week, I've been seeing many strange gambling/casino sites listed as referrers to my company's webpage. These pages are obvious googlespamming pages (examples include poker-4all.com, with various subpages such as texas-holdem.html, pacificpoker.html,etc). We got about 2000 referrals...
Have you tried mounting to any PCs?
I once had this same exact problem with an external drive. It would no longer mount on macs (disk utility would always hang, never showed up in finder, etc) but it worked fine on a winXP PC. To get it to actually mount again on the mac, I had to copy a file...
3com also makes a wireless card with a handy antenna that retracts when not in use. Another option.

Then it's most likely your hosts file is blocking the adservers. If you want to see the "useful" ads, the link in my previous post will tell you how to access the hosts file to make the necessary changes. As for me, most ads aren't too useful so I use Firefox and the Adblock extension...
if you modified your hosts file to block adservers, you'll get these errors. This page has helpful info:

Of course, if actual useful content is getting the "cannot be found" error, it's another issue, more likely an error on the server side.
update: just tried all the links and they get detected as this worm also. So should be just a false positve and not some trojan put in hijack this's place...
