In theory it will increase the maximum number of streams you can run, and it will increase your network throughput for network backups.
Whether or not you need multiple media agents depends on how many tape drives, whether or not the drives are SAN based, how much data your backing up, etc --...
On the Symmetrix side check the masking (if you have VCM enabled) that both paths are configured and also check that all appropriate bit settings are enabled at the FA or WWID level - you can check these in eLab Navigator on Powerlink for your particular system.

I'd say you'd have to script it.
Start your script with the (re)create and activate. Then put in a "verify -copied -i xx" then the terminate. Verify command with an interval will loop until all the blocks are copied across then move onto the terminate.

Check all your media agents, probably only one that cannot access. In the properties of the drive, the 'Drive Controller' tab should point you to the problem MA.

You can install v7 client on a v8 CommCell, but you will need to add a Registry Key to allow it.
DWORD: ‘bIgnoreCommServeVersion’ in ‘HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\GalaxyInstallerFlags’

Bit of a strange problem has presented itself in my Exch2003 mailbox backups (v8). 3 mailbox servers, 2 work fine and the 3rd working fine up to a couple of weeks ago. Config same on each.
Mailbox backups split into multiple SubClients depending upon mailbox, i.e. A*-C*, D*-G*, H*-K*, L*-Z* &...
...either software or hardware encrytion. I'm looking to get some examples of the performance hit that would be experienced with encryption.
Thanks
Jon
Thanks for the replies.
Psy053 - can't run both from the same server as the intention is to (roughly) copy the production setup which has a separate CommCell.
J
Thanks for that. Wouldn't be putting MA on the same VM, would have a physical server that this. This would only be a test environment and wouldn't be used much, so I don't really care about the performance at the end of the day, as long as the CommCell will work on a VM.
Anyone running a CommCell on a VMWare virtual machine? Looking to do this soon for a 'mini' environment and wondering if anyone has any experience?
Thanks
J
It depends how you're going to run the backup. If all servers are backed up via the network through the backup server, then the backup server will indeed be the only one that needs access to the tape library.
If however you have some larger servers that will need to have direct access to tape...
Markey, not sure what the Commvault recommendation is, but we use Synth Backups for Exchange Mailbox - upon implementaion we ran a full 'real' backup and then ran Incr and Synth from then on in. We did have a problem at one stage with Indexing that required a re-run of the 'real' full, but in...
Steve,
It's certainly feasible to connect up the switches once you have it all set up, but would be a lot cleaner to add the 2 new switches into your existing SAN beforehand, that way you don't need to worry about merging fabrics.
Not sure from above, but if your 2 existing switches are not...
Tim55, your transfer rate of your backup probably as more to do with the profile of the data you're backing up. If you're backing up lots 160GB of small files the backup will be slower than if you were backing up 160GB of larger files. Also check if you have AV scanning on Read access, this may...
Thanks - the solution was to disable the 1-touch backup according to Support. I'm surprised that even with 2 support contacts working on my call over a week and a bit that neither even suggested that KB article!
Jon
Anyone come across a problem like this before? I have a Windows 2000 backup running default subclient with '/' content and System State included - it will run to a certain point and then fail with a 'Connection reset by Peer' error. When I remove the System State from the content it works fine...
All HBA should work on the same Fibre Channel standard. I certainly have QLogic and Emulex on the same SAN switches. You will most likely need to rescan on the host side that to pick up the new devices.
On the firmware/driver - make sure that the level you download is supported by your storage...
