thanks brontosaurus. i have tried first part of this. ns1 as workgroup then installing dns creating a fwd lookup zone xyz.com. after installation. if i try to ping ns1.xyz.com. it does not find the system. i have registered ns1.xyz.com as a dns in network solution 1 week prior to this installation.

If the black screen is the only problem you could go to system properties click on advanced -> startup and recovery. Click the check box which say display list of operating system. that way it will boot directly with out giving you a option
