I would like to setup primary and secondary DNS for my site
I have two system with win2k server.
i have tried couple of combination nothing works. all the time both DNS server give a lot of error in event log and they go dead by the end of the day. i cannot ping the dns server.

1st option i tried.
The first system name is gen1
The second system name is gen2
I created Primary Domain comtrollers on both with the name as ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com. after installing the domain and dns on both the system i plugged it on the network.
when i checked mycomputer->properties i found my computername was gen1.ns1.xyz.com and gen2.ns2.xyz.com
when i tried to ping ns1.xyz.com after registering this dns as my dns in the domain it did work for couple of hrs. i got a msg "application log is full"
when i check event viewer i found lot of error "netlogin"
with in min my dns was not working. both the system has same error.

next option
i changed the names as system names as ns1 and ns2 and created domain contollers as xyz.com it does not take it.
i had problem in installing.

next option i tried having one primary controller with system name as gen1 and domain controller as ns1.xyz.com
and secondary computer name is gen2 when i tried to create a secondary domain controller it takes the name as ns2.ns1.xyz.com.

i am really confused. i feel somethign is really wrong with my concept. I never had this problem with NT system, but with win2k it is entirely diff. could anybody solve my problem.

i need two dns for ex ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com what should be my computer name. how do i go about.

Please Help.

first off , you created 2 separate and distinct domains named ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com. You need to demote these Domain Controllers, put them in a plain old workgroup, rename them NS1 and NS2 respectively, and reboot. Install DNS on NS1, delete the "." zone, and create a Forward Lookup zone called XYZ.COM. Point this server to itself for DNS resolution in the properties of it's NIC. Then re-promote it, and call the DNS domain-to-be just XYZ.COM during promotion. When this server is up and running, promote NS2 (make sure it's pointed to NS1 for DNS resolution) as a second DC in an Existing Forest/Domain, as you'll be joining the XYZ.COM domain. After this server is up and running, install DNS on it, acting as a Secondary/Slave for the XYZ.COM Forward lookup zone. In addition, make sure you have your Reverse Lookup Zones installed as well. Make sense?

thanks brontosaurus.
i have tried first part of this.
ns1 as workgroup then installing dns creating a fwd lookup zone xyz.com.
after installation. if i try to ping ns1.xyz.com. it does not find the system. i have registered ns1.xyz.com as a dns in network solution 1 week prior to this installation.

I don't think I'm getting your entire scenario....You say you registered your domain name? Do you mean that you registered with an Internet registrar like Register.Com or InterNic? Are you trying to set up your servers to act as NameServers for Internet queries or internally? Aside from that, you should have started with a regular W2K server named NS1 that belonged to a Workgroup called "Workgroup". You install the DNS service on this server, create the forward zone but DO NOT populate it. Make sure Dynamic updates are enabled and the server will populate it automatically. When you promote it, make it the first server in a new Forest named XYZ.COM

Your right. i am trying to install a two NameServer. and host my site at my place, that requires two nameserver to be pointing to my website.(iis server).
I read that we need to register the Nameserver also. so i registered two Nameserver. Initially when i registered it denied couple of times. then when i installed one Win2k server with name gen1.ns1.xyz.com and register nameserver as ns1.xyz.com. it accepted. the same way i installed gen2.ns2.xyz.com and registered the second nameserver it did accept but both system DNS crashed within 24 hrs.
i was not able to ping the Nameserver.

I am new to Win2k and having lot of trouble understanding how to go about.
Could you help me with some help how i could set this up. or is there any website where i can get some help. i have read thru every document provided by microsoft. they tell me how i should create domain controller DNS...etc.
but they are not telling me if i need two dns name server how should i install. should both have domain controllers. can i have a DNS with out a Active directory.
What do u mean by populate. i didnot understand the term.

Populate means add entries. Anyway...
First off, you do not need AD or a W2K domain (same thing, I guess)to have a DNS server. So, if you don't need an internal domain, you can bag it. Don't worry about registering the server until you've got it up and running.
You can still use my instructions, except don't bother with the DCPROMO business if you don't want to. Instead, just name your servers NS1 and NS2 and leave them in a Workgroup. Then, when you set up DNS, just name the Forward Lookup Zone XYZ.COM , make NS1 the Primary Server and NS2 the Secondary server. Add HOST entries for all your machines (including NS1 and NS2) using just their "first" names. You DON'T need to add NS entries, your ISP/Registrar will do that on their side. You need to add a entry for your site, and an MX entry for your mailserver. Remember to have ALL your machines point to NS1 for DNS resolution in the properties of their NIC's. Anyway, once you've got this running, then re-register. You are registering the domain XYZ.COM with nameservers NS1.XYZ.COM and NS2.XYZ.COM. Hope that helps, my hands are tired...

Thank you brontosaurus

it works . thank you.
