Event Viewer on my w2k server has the following error;

The DNS server encountered a packet addressed to itself

It tells me to check the forwarders list, master lists of secondary zones, notify lists of primary zones, and delegations of subzones.

I am totally lost with DNS. Not only do I not know if I have any of these things, I wouldn't know how to check them if I did.

Can anyone give me any(useful)advise please?

OK,
1)Open DNS manager. Right click on your DNS server, go to Properties. Click the Forwarders tab. If you see the IP address of your DNS server in there, remove it.
2)Expand the server object so you see your zones. Expand Forward Lookup Zones. You should see your domain name and maybe other zones, depending on your config. Right click each of these zones and go to Properties. On the General tab, you'll see what type of zone it is (AD integrated, Primary, Secondary). If you have any zones that are listed as Secondary, but the Start of Authority is that server, this is an incorrect config.
3)In the same dialog window (right click on a zone) there will be a Zone Transfers tab. At the bottom of that, there's a Notify tab. If your DNS server is listed there, remove it. If you have the bullet in "Servers listed on the Name Servers tab" , change that to either "Any Name Server", or "The Following Servers" and add the appropriate IP's.
4) As for delegations, it's likely you don't have any, but from your primary server, those zones would appear as gray folders...

Everything seems ok in all of the areas you suggest. In the zone transfers notification, it is set to "The Following Servers" but there areno IP's listed. What IP's would I need in here?

So it all seems OK at this level. What else could be causing this error?

I have the same problem as PaulBarron and i have tryed everything you said and all the stuff on the Microsoft Web but it is still there.

You see no IP listed because you have probably all ip's selected.
If you choose "Select ip" all the used IP will be listed.
Remove these that are bound to your DNS server
(The forwarders tab as mentioned by bronto) It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

To solve this problem open your DNS snap-in,
- right click your server name (SERVER1) and hit Properties
- click Root Hints tab
- remove that server (SERVER1) from the list, if you have more than one DNS server you can add them here
