I set the timeout value to 360sec (5min) and never had this problem again. I wouldn't leave the timeout disabled with a value of zero.

You could download the OS X Developer Tools DEC2001 from Apple's Developer Site and then download the source for the latest version of Samba server from http://www.samba.org and compile the server and set it up.
