Problem turned out to be 2 fold, tape drive was bad, replaced and cpio script working great. Problem with backup manager was default media value was too large, removed all tape drives from system, relinked kernel added drives back and all working now.

Should be able to go into bios of motherboard and have cpu fans run at constant speed, default is speed based on cpu temperature. I have 5.0.5 and 5.0.4 running on P4's n o problem. (yet)
