is there more information about the scsi error in the arcserves logs ?
in the windows eventviewer ?
Make sure the cable is ok ?
Make sure the firmaware is up to date too ?
have a look at the following ...

can you try this :
1- create a new job ( any complete server backup)
2-create a second one on the same server but this one will be a differential one.
make this run and check if the backup is working fine.
let us know, if the diff backup is working taht way.

The problem is that the archive bit ( now i got it right :-)) is not cleared .....
the probleme was the same for an older version of arcserve ...
Can you tell me if your Arcserve is updated to SP1 ?
if not i stongly suggest to download it and apply the SP1.
As the sp1 correct manay many...

Can you run a read/write test on those media ?
what if you try some other tape ?
Make sure your tape drive ( which one is it ?) is up to date
how do you try to format the tapes ? and what is the backup software version ?

in your job, normally you can choose betwenn two type of complete backup. ( my arcserve is in french so for the technical terme translation ...can' t find the right word lets make it simple ..)
in the last tab of uyour jobe where you selct what kind of backup you have in order...

what is the type of tape , the brand, all the detaillllllsss !!
Anyway, personally i ve never seen tapes with out write protection on it !!
and if i see some in the future i'll bin them !!

No it won't try an other full backup.
it just notice that some file couldn't be backuped up.
Arcserve will set automaticly a new job if one of your server on your job FAILED to be backed up.

Well, before installing you should check and/or call support ( just to be sure).
I tried to backed up some R11.X with the last sp it works.
and it didn't works with server on which no SP have been installed....
on the CA website ...

you can browse the db by installaing on the server the following :
SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi <-- download from microsoft web site.
note that this file is for X64 edition, try with the 32 bits edition if needed.
once installed, launch it, and browse it very carefully !

These .stf files are temporary files ..............these files will also all be deleted upon startup of the information store service.
