I have setup an Arcserve 12 backup schedule as follows:

7 day backup, full backup on Sunday with Differential backups, with GFS enabled.

I am staging to a SAN, and then copying to tape 30 minutes after the backup begins.

I am using agents for all of the 10 servers I backup.

Now, everything works fine for the full backup, yet arcserve will not do a differential backup the next day, rather another full backup.

I have noticed that the backup is marked as "incomplete" due to some files being open on some of the servers. Would this make arcserve try another full backup each night?

Any ideas??

Make sure the user account provided for the security information is a member of the Backup Operators group.

A status of Incomplete will not effect this.

User has been added to backup operators group. I will see tomorrow morning how it goes.

hi !

No it won't try an other full backup.
it just notice that some file couldn't be backuped up.

Arcserve will set automaticly a new job if one of your server on your job FAILED to be backed up.

hope that help.

cheers.

Thanks for the info. I have taken the suggestions above, and arcserve is still doing a full backup each night. There are no failed backups, only incomplete...

Any more suggestions??

hi !!

in your job, normally you can choose betwenn two type of complete backup. ( my arcserve is in french so for the technical terme translation ...can' t find the right word lets make it simple ..)
in the last tab of uyour jobe where you selct what kind of backup you have in order:

-Complete (something writed here..seems to mean keep byte "abcdef" )

-complete(something writed here..seems to mean ERASE or delete byte "abcdef"...)

-incremental
-Differential.

i think you should select one or the other complete option to keep this byte active in order to make diffrential backup.

Let me know if i m wrong ...and thx in advance for translation.

Regards.

hi !

The problem is that the archive bit ( now i got it right :)) is not cleared .....

the probleme was the same for an older version of arcserve ...

Can you tell me if your Arcserve is updated to SP1 ?
if not i stongly suggest to download it and apply the SP1.

As the sp1 correct manay many bugs on this version.

ck permissions.
even admin and bkup oper may not have write & modify permissions.
so job can bkup data but then does not have the rights to clear the archive bit.
setup test job with new user that has full control.

downloading SP1 now. Its 3 Gig!!!! so it could take a while.

Also, I am using admin for backups. I have added admin to all domain and local administrators groups and backup operators groups. Yet I still cant get differential backups. Is there any way to check permissions easily??

SP1 applied, access granted to all servers, and still no differential backups. Any more ideas??

Sorry to bump again, but I deleted the backup job and created it again fresh, but I still cant seem to get the differential backups working. Any more tips?

hi !!

can you try this :

1- create a new job ( any complete server backup)
2-create a second one on the same server but this one will be a differential one.
make this run and check if the backup is working fine.

let us know, if the diff backup is working taht way.

Cheers.
