Thanks for the responses.
What material did you use? or have you done the course?
I'm interested because I was going to write a study guide
for the exam. I recently wrote the exam cram 2 for Sol 9
network admin exam and wanted to see if there was any
interest and if many people are either taking...
Hi all
Is anyone taking, or preparing, for the Solaris 9
security administrator certification? I'd be interested
to hear how many have heard of it, or intend to take it.
Thanks

They often can't be killed because they have become zombie
processes.
In solaris 9, the preap command will take care of most of
them, although this isn't much help for Solaris 8.
If you can schedule a reboot sometime, then this will
probably be necessary to clear out the processes, but
the...
Hi
The device file /dev/dtremote is created when you do a
remote login to CDE.
You can see this if you use an X Windows server, for example
, from a PC (I use Attachmate KEA!X).
A long listing of /dev/dtremote shows that it is normally
a symbolic link to /dev/null. I would check to see if this...
Hi
SunOS 5.5.1 is Solaris 2.5.1
[ Solaris is the Operating Environment, which contains
not only the SunOS Operating System, but a Windowing system
and desktop tools ].
Hope this helps.

Hi
You should be able to put this drive in. I have read
somewhere that it can take up to 9GB
Good Luck

Hi
This will work ok if you link ucbcc to your gcc command.
For example, if you installed gcc into /usr/local, then the
gcc command will be in /usr/local/bin.
ln -s /usr/local/bin/gcc /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc
Then if you have /usr/ucb in your path, you can use the cc
command.
Good luck

Hi
In order to just find john, and not john12, in this case,
you could use "awk" to do the comparison. If I have a file
called filename with the following lines in it:
john
john1
john2
john21
john12
john44
then by running this:
cat filename | awk '{if ($1 == "john") print...
Hi
The easiest way to do multiple ftp jobs like this to the
same box is to just add an extra alias in the /etc/hosts
file. For example, you have FTPBOX01, so add the aliases
FTPALIAS1 and FTPALIAS2 for example, then in the .netrc
you can refer to each one separately and have them do
different...
NIS+ uses rpc to communicate so you would be looking
at port 111 (portmapper), see the man page for rpcbind.
The nis+ daemon entries can be seen in /etc/rpc as follows:
nisd 100300 rpc.nisd
nispasswd 100303 rpc.nispasswdd

Hi
There might be something wrong with your boot settings
somewhere - because the reference to misc/sparcv9/krtld
is wrong. krtld resides in misc, so should read:
misc/krtld. Have you tried doing an interactive boot from
the prom, i.e.
boot -a
then seeing what the default values are for loading...
Hi
I can recommend the Solaris 8 system administrator guide
by Bill Calkins published by NewRiders. I have worked with
the author on his last 3 books (Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7 and
now SOlaris 8), all of which have had good reviews.
The book contains more than just addressing the objectives
in the...
Hi
If you're using Solaris 8, then disksuite is included on
the CD "Software 2 of 2" in the EA subdirectory.
You can download the Solaris 8 CD images from the Sun
Microsystems web site (www.sun.com).
Alternatively, you can also download Disksuite v4.2.1
from this URL at the sun web...
I don't actually do it, because I've normally used
veritas volume manager for database applications that
use raw devices, such as informix for example.
So, say you create m50 which is a mirror of two other
devices, m51 and m52 you would do:
metainit d51 1 1 c0t0d0s4
metainit d52 1 1 c2t0d0s4...
Just a thought, but are you using the "Installation" disk?
cos most people just use that one as a coaster or as lining
for the bin. Majority just boot off "Software 1of2" disk
and install that way.

Don't forget that a cron job when it logs in does not
have any environment set, you will need to do this at the
start of the script. For example, it executes fw, but the
PATH probably isn't set. If let's say, your environment
settings are in the .profile of the home directory, then
you could do...
Have you tried using prtdiag?
Path is /usr/platform/`uname -m`/sbin/prtdiag
(where the uname -m bit works out the architecture, i.e.
sun4u etc).

You don't need to do an install at all, just get a CD
and do a boot -s cdrom from the ok prompt.
When you get to the prompt, you can mount your existing
root filesystem into a temporary location and remove the
current root password. For example, if your root is
c0t0d0s0, then
mount...
You're quite right,
when you use the format command to create a partition,
the result is the raw partition you require. Do not run
newfs or anything on it, sybase will use it as it is.
You might need to change the ownership and/or the
permissions of the raw device file to the sybase user.
