when users of sun/solaris 8 via a terminal emulator exit without logging out, their sessions do not die and so fill up the available processes per user. How do I get rid of them?

They often can't be killed because they have become zombie
processes.

In solaris 9, the preap command will take care of most of
them, although this isn't much help for Solaris 8.
If you can schedule a reboot sometime, then this will
probably be necessary to clear out the processes, but
the users need to be educated to log out properly !.
Good luck
