you can forward dns requests from one domain without a dns server to a domian that does. Yur w2k clients need to find a dc to log-on, thats why its taking ages to login. I suggest reading up on dns. Microsoft white papers should help.

I agree with paul, any service you want to run out on the net should be put in a DMZ, all rules on your fw should block unwanted access to your DMZ servers.

Have you tried to apply the local group policy to the pcs. I cant find anywhere where you would pick a group for the GP to affect (in a domain you would), but I think it will not affect the admin account. Try it.
