I have come sccross this problem before and it turned out to be the power supply on each occasion (One of them was a new system in a new case.)
Its worth a try before you start replacing expensive components.

Different resolutions/colours often need the monitor alignment to be adjusted. If you have a digital monitor, ie; one that the screen alignment is controlled electronicaly - it will remember the settings for each mode so you will only have to set it once for each one.

I'm not sure what is causing the problem but you can try forcing your system to boot normally by editing the MSDOS.SYS file.
Make a copy of MSDDOS.SYS before messing with it.
You will need to uncheck it's read-only attribute before editing.
Open the file in Notepad
Add a new line...
