hard to be sure specifically what isn't working or what error msg you're getting. are you using encrypted or unencrypted passwords in samba? if using unencrypted, did you modify the XP security policy to accept unencrypted password from smb servers?

are you behind a firewall? that happens with me on my solaris machines at work (and my win machines for that matter). i can get to yahoo.com and whatever else thru a browser because of course the browser is config'd to use a proxy for connecting to external sites. but ping has no way of knowing...

I haven't yet jumped up to RH9, but I know RH 7.2 & 8 give you the option of installing samba services in the initial install. however, an even better idea no matter what version Linux you're on is to go to samba.org and grab the latest...

ok, found the solution - what a bonehead I am, can you tell I'm a Linux newbie? It was the default firewall of course. just turned it off and suddenly samba worked beautifully. now i just need to go back and tweak the firewall so that samba traffic can get thru with the firewall up. chris
