Check the Logon network security - if its set to NT authentication it wont prompt for a logon as it uses the username it was logged onto the domain with. If it set to none it will prompt.

When trying to attach to BE, are you trying to access a local or network server. Locally, the message occurs if the BE service isn't running. Try stopping and starting the services and retry.
