linney, thanx again for your continuing interest.
For info, I've re-formatted the C: partition and tried installing clean versions of XP; XP pro; win 2000 and a second set of ACER recovery disks. All have the same effect: they load right to the end of 'set-up' and then the keyboard and touch-pad...

Hi,situation has now changed; I have managed to load XP from the ACER recovery disks, but after loading my profile, the desktop starts and all the icons appear, then the system tray starts to load. It's at this point the keyboard locks! I can use safe mode as normal. Any suggestions?

Thanx - the integral keyboard works OK during the very early stages of XP system installation (ie when you have to chose which partiton to install on, the up/down arrow keys work fine) and I can make the cursor move whilst the XP splash screen is loading on re-boot. Therefore deduce that...
I have a system recovery problem with my Acer Aspire laptop. I lent it to a friend, who tried to use a memory stick in the USB ports, normally used by a bluetooth device (used for dial-up modem) and an optical mouse. When he returned it, the laptop would hang when connected to the internet...
wolluf, Thanks
- I installed the XP operating system on the same partition as W2k. From what you're saying, that was a mistake. I'll try again and this time create new partitions. (B T W, the XP CD is a legitimate one and not XP Pro)
tfg13/electronic freak -thanks.
I used ctrl alt esc to acess the BIOS and disable the password protection and change the boot order to read the CD.
I was then able to install XP, but fter installation and re-boot, it came up with the 'logon dialog' with ID already completed as 'ADMINISTRATOR'...
I have been donated a Compaq laptop that was the property of a neighbour's husband. He died 8 months ago.
There are two password protection, one during boot-up (Bios P/w) which is known. The password to access Windows 2000 pro, however is unknown. I want to remove all data and install XP. Can...
I am reprogramming (Win98SE) a second-hand tecra 8000 laptop, without the advantage of configuration build CD. I did succeed (by trial and error) in getting the DVD-rom drive to play DVDs by downloading and installing a number of 'shareware' players. I then found several references on the...

Sorry my reply not clear,- it was to 'Lesgray' the 2nd respondent, who suggested I try the physical volume control on the laptop - hence my RED-FACE !! - thanks

I installed XP Prof, but altough 'Fn F4' will produce ascending beeps, no other sound emanates from the speakers or headphone sockets. All the troubleshooter options check OK, the BIOS has the sound enabled and the Windows media player...

I'm trying to install IE5.x on an old laptop running early version of win95. I have the dial-up network connected OK, the modem works and signs-on to my ISP, but when I run ie501steup.exe or ie5setup.exe, the message I get after the first initialisation dialog is "setup was unable to...
Wolluf - thank you - I didn't want to hear that I couldn't keep the apps!! (but I expected it nonetheless). I have saved all data to second partition and booted and loaded Win'95. The only problem I now have is the screen resolution, it remains steadfastly at 640x480. I am currently trying to...
Wolluf - thanks but I'm hopeful I can retain the data on the hard-drives, including the registration of the applications (like MS-Office etc.).
I think I have a problem with the display, because one of the 'alternative' config.sys files I tried had a command along the lines of:
