cc and neil, the problem is now solved. I checked the settings for the internal NIC and power saving was switched on. I disabled this feature and the connection became active again.

I tried to restart the modem but I just got same result. I also tried a different cable but to no avail.
when I ipconfig /all - I get "media disconnected" message.
what can I do - dealing with an XP system here...it has a cable modem...and its a wierd problem.
here is the required info:
a friends Dell laptop will not connect to the net....the
modem is working fine as is the cable as I tried it on my own laptop and was able to access the net no problem...
There are six user profiles on PC XP(SP2).
Intermitantanly - I cannot switch between user.
If click on from USER1 TO USER2..it will just bouce back to the logon on screen...very annoying problems...
This even happens to new users profiles which have just been created.....

Martin, Thanks for that advice. I always thought that even with XP.....Windows-based tools were inaccurate. I used to use the Disk Doctor tool with Systemworks but that always nearly always reported back positive results....when the viruses and spyware would be cleared...Disk Doctor would report...
WD HDD is slow as hell. Was completely formatted and XP put back on but it keeps on freezing.
Did about 6 Tests on it - all full scans. Two come back as
