I have been trying to install an HP 8250 Scanner on my XP professional system, and no matter what I do, it just won't install. This is a USB system

I've narrowed the problem down to something on this system, as the scanner installs fine on other XP and windows 2000 systems, but I have no idea what it could be at this point. I know I need to dig a little deeper, but I don't know what else I can do to troubleshoot.

The message I keep getting is "There was a problem installing this hardware" "An error occurred during the installation of the device" "the required section was not found in the INF"

What else can I check about why it can't communicate with the scanner?

Is USB support on in the BIOS? Do other USB devices work ok? XP Pro is not listed in the specs as being supported by the scanner software:

"compatible for Microsoft® Windows® 98, Me, 2000 XP"

Have you checked on the HP site for XP Pro drivers?

Hate to say this, KevinADC, but XP is XP HOME, PRO, PRO CORP, and MEDIA CENTER.... when it comes to the drivers... the only exception is XP 64bit...

@GeminiDaddy (Twins eh?) - have you tried to install the software with the Scanner not attached to the PC, reboot and then physically attach the Scanner?

have you tried another USB port? are these Ports activated in the BIOS setup?

No reason the hate to say it.... I know XP is all those things, but I was not aware XP is used as a catch all term to include them all.

@KevinADC - I hate to correct people, is what I meant... no hard feelings there...

hey guys!

yeah, good guess about the twins! - they just turned 1. it's been a long year. (fun though).

usb is supported in the bios, other USB devices seem to work fine - i tried a "thumb" drive and a usb optical mouse, and both were just fine.

I did try all of the other ports only to find the same problem with each. Whenever I plug in the usb, a box pops up saying "found new hardware, HP 8200 Series Scanner" - followed by the previously annotated message.

I tried installing the software first, to no avail, so i tried in secondarily, that didn't work either.

One funny thing i've noticed is that my scanners/camera wizard does not work. I go into control panel, and I try to click "add device" to do it manually, and it's like it doesn't recognize the mouse click. It just does nothing.

maybe check the HP site for any known issues installing your scanner. I'm not sure HP even has that kind of information on their site but worth a check I guess.

they do, and I did. I followed the instructions, which involved making manual additions to the registry to no avail, and in allcalled tech support. I got some more procedures from them, which didn't work either.

So now I'm SOL I guess, unless I can determine why my add scanner/camera wizard does not respond when I click it. which may not be an HP issue????

Oddly, I don't see the device in device manager, even though the software installs.

I saw somthing that mentioned a conflict between it and real player, so i uninstalled all real networks software, but that didn't work either.

but the clever folks here at tek-tips more often than not provide me with something i overlooked - so i'm still hopeful!

Well heres an idea, put your system disc in , go to command prompt and type sfc/scannow . If it says please insert disc with sp2 follow the link below to make a windows xp sp2 disc. If it doesnt just let it scan to correct your files if any are changed. If it replaces any restart and try the scanner again.

If none of this does not work try the old manual way. Uninstall it completely any drivers you have folders of it. Now go to device manager, right click on where it finds the device go to properties of it. Reinstall the driver by pointing to the .inf file on the cd or file. If that works then just install the software that works with the scanner and dont try reinstalling the driver part just the software. This might work. If not go here to this site and see if theres any other drivers you can find to use with it. Must be a member but membership is free.

a bad USB cable or bad scanner? Take it back to the store and get a new one if possible, just tell them it doesn't work.

I don't think it's a bad scanner or cable, since it fires right up on other systems.

e freak - it doesn't show up in device manager, so I can't do it the old fashioned way. Maybe I'll try the SP2 upgrade

Yea, I forgot you already posted that earlier. Are you using a brand name computer (Dell, HP, etc) or is it a clone?

did you go to device manager and click on "view devices by connection" ?
